Ethiopiques Vol. 4: Ethio Jazz & Musique, Instrumentale 1969-1974
So I was watching this Bill Murray movie with my friends Britany J and Emory called "Broken Flowers" and all the sudden this incredible music begins to invade the score. It was rhythmic and very earthy. Needless to say, I had to leave the "screening" immediately to google the person responsible. Turns out its this Ethiopian guy named Mulatu Astatke. Apparently, he went to America to study jazz in the 60's, brought it back to the motherland and made some incredible recordings. It's like Miles Davis and Fela Kuti smoked alot of cheebah and took LSD together (this might have actually happened, I'm not sure...) But you can check out alot of his tracks on the Ethiopiues Vol. 4 compilation, as it deals almost exclusively with his music. Take two LPs and call me in the morning.

  1. fistula spume says It's an awesome album and a really great series. I'm slowly getting them all. I'm on 9 now. Just like 13 more to go. Those Ethiopians were prolific. Praise Haile Selassie!

  2. Cody B says Number 4 was the first one I got in the series and it still my favorite. The Ethiopiques all sound very different from anything else. Truly strange and ethereal stuff.
