NIN: 1 Ghosts I

Posted about 4 years ago

Ghosts I-IV is a two hour collection instrumentals divided into 4 volumes -- the first of which is available for free here: http://ghosts.nin.com/main/order_options

NIN instrumentals. Not much else needs to be said, it's a given that they're probably gonna be sweet - and they are. All the sounds are typical of NIN. Except one, the guitar sound in track 5... this surfer/western/spy (clean w/ chorus, short delay) thing. It's cool, but I can't remember anything NIN-related that ever used that sound (unless you count NBK).

I only have the first volume, and after a day of listening I don't really have anything negative to say about it... well, ok.. maybe a few things.

Track 8: loud and distorted, but ultimately sterile.
Track 7: not bad, just a little... boring - like the ending of 'The Great Destroyer'... a little too rigid, a little too generic... kinda just falls flat.
Track 6: probably could have benefited from dropping that loop at some point and then reintroducing it later in the song.

but that's it... so, unless the other 3 volumes are totally unlistenable, this could become one of my favorite NIN albums.

  2. FishPoisonCon says fight club: the movie that sent droves of clueless college kids out to buy doolittle, not realizing that 'the song from fight club' is on surfer rosa. i don't really have anything to say about the movie itself, but i can't forgive exploiting one of the pixies' best songs. of course, there's two sides to it... i'm pretty sure the surge in popularity was responsible for their reunion back in 2003 - which was the first chance i had to see them live.

  3. Zeroskilz says The song didn't even make the soundtrack. Even with the reunion, I still never had a chance to see them live. I was fortunate enough to catch Frank Black on a solo tour he did and heard him "cover" some Pixies tunes. I liked the work the Dust Brothers did for FC. I always thought it was strange that they pegged a Pixies song to the end of the movie though; especially considering it was the only music in the whole film that wasn't done by the Dust Brothers.

  4. FishPoisonCon says "The song didn't even make the soundtrack." Really? I guess it's obvious I never actually listened to it -- other than WIMM , I never heard anyone mention the music from FC. Interesting. I saw Frank Black play solo in the Union Sq Virgin Cafe -- met him, and totally did the "oh shit, I shaking hands with [insert favorite celeb] and I can't even say my name" thing. We just gazed into each other's eyes and did this weird extended hand shake thing... I felt like such a retard afterward, I've never done that. I'm glad only one person I know witnessed it...lol.

  5. Zeroskilz says You'll have to check the soundtrack out. Very similar to Ghosts, all instrumental music. A bit more bleepy and fuzzy than what I've had a chance to listen to so far. Your meeting with Frank Black sounds like my meeting with Mike Doughty. I think I got out the word, "Yeah". Saw Frank play in the same place I pulled my gaff with Doughty. Small packed little venues are the best.

  8. gakker says @democlez same here...i knew it wasn't a "NIN Album" per se, so I didn't go into it expecting fully fleshed out verse-chorus-verse tracks...but on nearly every track there are hooks and sounds and rhythms that are right out of earlier works, so it's hard NOT to start making the comparisons to "real NIN albums"...and then you have to remind yourself that it's a multi-musician collaborative project...and somewhere in all that brain-noise, you have to let all those notions go and just let the soundscape wash over you...and when it does, it's a great work.
