Linkin Park and Ayn Rand's idea of a Sense of Life

Posted 4 months ago

I'm going to stick with Rhapsody for now, because they treated me fairly in the end, giving me purchase credit to compensate for my lost Napster credits. Also, Rhapsody still has advantages over MOG, particularly better search. But MOG allows blogging about music, which I will continue to use it for, and I will continue to keep an eye on MOG in case it eventually gets better.

Linkin Park is good to listen to when I'm angry, but I was enjoying Reanimation today while in a good mood and feeling energized. Maybe it helps that this is a remix album, since remixes tend to be more dancable. But I think it serves as a counterexample against Ayn Rand's aesthetic theory that a piece of music just expresses a singular sense of life, and it is good or bad depending upon what kind of sense of life it expresses. There is more to it than this. It is also about what the listener brings to the music. If I am angry and pissed off, I will listen to Linkin Park in one way, but if I'm not, I may focus more on the energy and musicianship behind the music.

The corollary to this is that you can't judge a person's sense of life by the music he is listening to. Even if the music seems to express one thing to you, the listener might be getting something else out of it.

Well, MOG has a free plan, so yo can keep Rhapsoday and use MOG freeplay occasionally to hear what Rhapsody doesn't have. Best of both worlds.

    Welcome to MOG blogging.

Hey Fergus, welcome to Mog. I also was a Napsterite, but came here around Feb. 2010 & haven't been the same.

If you want to discover a ton of new music, you have got to stick around & follow my fellow moggers posts.

Your gonna hear some good stuff!
