Track Review: Conductor by We Were Promised Jetpacks
-
Artist:
It starts out with a simple guitar part, the same note alternating with two others. In comes this voice, a Scottish tenor, quiet and moody. He sings softly but roughly, his Northern dialect giving a slight edge to his lamentation. The best bits are the long, high vowels.
In come bells, drums eventually, and then the rest of the band hops on. The song chugs along behind the vocalist's lead, guitars rumbling. Despite the growing force of the music, the band never yields control to the song, maintaining a steady grip on the tone and tempo, speeding up, slowing down, echoing the words of the young man: woeful observations on control and freedom within a passionate relationship. The lyrics suggest it is a bad one, but it is human nature to find comfort in the habitual, whether good or bad, and the lyrics seem to recognize that.
Taking a literal interpretation of the song, one might understand it as being about addiction, but I have a feeling it's about a girl. Maybe it's about both. Either way, it's very pretty.
