A cold, rainy morning. I've been sick for two weeks. Walking through the drizzle to get to work. Feeling down, wondering how much worse things can get. Then the iPod shuffles to Blind Willie Johnson. Dark Was the Night. And things start to seem OK. Just one of those little transcendent moments that music makes possible.

In a Rite Aid in Brooklyn. Kelly Sweet's version of Aerosmith's Dream On is playing over the PA. And the guy behind the counter is REALLY into it. He gets even MORE into it when he finds out that I know the song, too. The Aerosmith version, at least.He tells me that one of the things he likes about working there is the music. I pay for my Pine Sol and leave.
