WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

The Birth

Posted about 1 year ago

I've been away from mog for ages in MOG years (approximately a week), awaiting the birth of my first child, Riley. He was born on Wednesday at 12:09. If being impartial doesn't count, I must admit, he's a real cutie. I was slightly obsessed with not just what music to play for him on his very own Baby mix, but what, if anything would be playing when he was born.

I was strongly advised to play some upbeat stuff, "Jamiroquai, Tahiti 80, Phoenix, things that will keep my mind off it." Cool. I can do that. After realizing that I totally forgot to listen for the song at 12:09, I had to backtrack my On-the-Go playlist roughly 80 minutes after the fact. The song was indeed Tahiti 80, "Matter of Time." Cool, huh?

Riley's doing well. He's been exposed to softer songs to start, Belle & Sebastian, The Eels, Jose Gonzales, Morphine, Azure Ray, Christopher O'Riley (go and figure) and yes, even the Rockabye Pixies and Cure songs.

Though I can't hold a tune worth a crap and really hate singing (because I'm so horrible at it), I have sung Riley to sleep several times already. He doesn't seem to care. That's one of many reasons why he's just so damn perfect in my eyes.

Very cool. Congrats! My kids came into this world and were pretty much raised on my own music (which of course doesn't help you at all, but still). Having a dad (who really probably can't sing worth a crap but) who is always singing (professionally no less) has it's ups and downs, I'm sure, but the downs are minimal. And my kids are forever my biggest fans! So sing. However you think of your voice, your baby will love it--at least for a time. And perhaps you will be blessed as I've been with a musical household: My eldest son is a guitartist and singer/songwriter; my 2nd son is a pianist and bassist, singer/songwriter; and my youngest daughter plays the piano and has the voice of an angel (inherited from her mom no doubt). So enjoy this time; I'm happy from you!

Thanks for the good word, Klyde.  I'm excited about the experience and how to handle the music side of this little boy's upbringing is constantly on my mind.  Don't want to impose too much on him but at the same time want to make sure that he doesn't get behind on the good stuff like I did late in the game.  I hope he isn't drawn to Top 40 radio!

Gawd no! But perhaps he'll be the one who changes everything...

Many congratulations, Eric! Really happy for you!

Riley is going to have great taste in music. Like father, like son, and the apple-tree saying :)

Thank you much.  Hopefully with all of this action going on around here, I can still find time to MOG on a regular basis.
