What REALLY is the best Replacements Album?
-
Artist:
I know. I'm nearly 25 years late. I missed the bus but I'm unsatisfied. Yesterday I said to myself, "I'll buy a remastered copy of The Replacements Let It Be - one of the most critically acclaimed independent albums of all time." I literally said that to myself and everyone at Newbury Comics kind of tweaked their heads like I was a little left of the dial. I've had the Warner Brothers release, Tim for several years and I have to be honest with you, I really don't like Let It Be as much as Tim. I like the melody and song structure on songs like "I'll Buy", "Kiss Me On the Bus" "Little Mascara" & "Bastards of Young". Maybe I need some more time w/ Let It Be or maybe I just needed to hear the record then to know what all of the fuss was about. Either way, "I Will Dare" is the only track thus far to strike a chord for me. Let It Be just isn't my favorite thing.
Am I missing something? Are there other superior Mats LPs out there that I should just go for? Does anyone else like Tim? I have a sneaky suspicion, in a few weeks I'll be eating my words and will love this record. But for now, here comes a regular - I'm listening to "I'll Buy" non-stop.

This is like asking me do I like cake or ice cream! Here are my TOP 5 Mats records, with my fave tracks:
1. Tim -- Here Comes a Regular is brilliant
2. Let It Be -- I Will Dare is a great opening song.
VERY CLOSE BETWEEN THE TWO ABOVE.
3. Pleased to Meet Me -- Night Club Jitters -- "I take a drink before I hit the town . . "
4, Hootenany - Color Me Impressed hinted at what was to come, but also check out Run It!
5. All Shook Down -- Someone Take the Wheel is outstanding.
Thanks for the tips. I am familar w/ all of those records but didn't know the ranking of their popularity. Sounds like Let It Be needs some more listens.
All shook down is so underated, I love that album so much. Another one I do not see up there would have to be is Don't Tell A Soul. I sometimes feel that is the album people dont like to admit is one of their favorites. It doesnt get much better than this.
My connection is a little spotty but from what I saw/heard, this song is spectacular. I have never heard it before. I'll have to p/u Don't Tell A Soul.
After reading your post I went and got another album that I love and put it on for the night. Quite a few years ago First Ave had a ton of local musicians come over to play their favorite Replacements song and they put it onto disc for the occasion. While the recording is a bit shitty, it still is a great collection of covers that I like to listen to every so often
I think just discovering the Replacements was an inspiration for me. I started with PLease To Meet Me because my older sister had a cassette copy of it. Listening to that album brings back great memories of mowing my lawn with my walkman on in the summer. As I got older I came to appreciate everything Replacements and even saw them open for Tom Petty in CT at Lake Compounce. My band has always been influenced by them. They are truely the Big Star of our generation, critically acclaimed and artistically influential.
