Who Wants to Play Celebrity Name Drop?

Posted about 1 year ago

The game is simple. The rules are easy. You have a week to think about it. Here they are:

1. Pick a song (artist and title) that mentions the name of a celebrity in it. Celebrity can be defined by any famous person - musician, entertainer, politician, writer, etc.

2. The song can drop the celebrity's name in either the title or in the song. 3 points for title and 7 points for somewhere in the song but not in the title.

3. Full names only. Exceptions are Elvis, Madonna, Jesus, etc.

4. Once a celebrity has been name dropped, they're done. So, no multiple songs about Elvis from other Moggers.

5. Multiple name drops from the same band are fine

6. You have a week to think about it and post (5:00 PM EST next Thursday)

7. I'll moderate, but it would be nice to have some folks help confirm the validity of the songs (moreso the songs about...whomever)

My examples follow - pay attention to the format (these are exempt from the game, so no David Bowie, Leonard Cohen or Jude Law {sorry ladies})

(David Bowie, I Love You) Since I was Six - Brian Jonestown Massacre (David Bowie)
- 3 points

Pennyroyal Tea - Nirvana (Leonard Cohen) - 7 points

Jude Law and a Semester Abroad - Brand New - 3 points

Questions?

OK. Cool.

Ready, Set...Begin!!!

Sorry, I put up Rick James twice!

Originally, when it was just the home recordings, it was Baby Bird, but when the band got involved it became Babybird, so, it is kind of both.  Most of the time I just type it as one word, though.

Just to be clear (from earlier), regardless of what you believe, Jesus was historically proven to have lived - so in essence, he is a famous person and not mythological.

    Onto the points

Sunshine - pulling out some good ones.  I didn't even know Clutch had a song titled Willie Nelson.  My college roommate was/is big into Clutch still!  98 points

    Contraband - 24 points

Cody B. - 7 points, R&B and hip-hop are great places to check for this sort of stuff...

Brand X - I'll pass on Frances Farmer...refers to Frances Bean...but great job finding some good ones.  You're in the lead.  119 points.

Still have some time.  PS - vacation begins for me in about 24 hours so we'll extend this till I return - next Saturday 7/26

So why do bands referenced in lyrics not count as famous musicians? That doesn't make sense to me but then again it's your game Eric, lol. Fun game though.

As far as I understand it, the Nirvana song actually refers to the actress, Frances Farmer, but it is your call as to if it counts.

I would suggest a revision to the second round of this (to make it more challeging) would be to eliminate both artist name dropped and the artist who name dropped them.  Speaking as on who used Dylan, who was cited a number of times, I think it would be more challenging to have to double check or cross refference both from the list.

Example: My Bob Dylan entry would cross both Alicia Keyes and Bob Dylan off the list.  Perhaps a shorter play version with these rules?

Just a suggestion, as another mogger who like to create games...

If it references a band member, that counts but if it's just a band name, that's not a celebrity, that's pushing it a little (lots of songs referencing The Bealtes and such...).  Does that make sense...?

OK.  I like Contraband's round 2 suggestion so let's cancel out acts/bands/artists who have been mentions (yikes, this is getting tough).  From this point on, everything mentioned is in foul territory.

Brand X, thanks for the explanation on Frances Farmer - wasn't aware that was referring to a person.  You get credit for that.  141 points and the lead.

Cody B - Mrs. Robinson is so blatent but I never even recalled Joe Dimaggio was name dropped in that, 21 points.

    Weezer-"Heart Songs"

    Gordon Lightfoot
    Sang a song
    About a boat
    That sank in the lake
    At the break
    Of the morning
    A Cat named Stevens
    Found a faith
    He could believe in
    And Joan Baez
    I never listened
    Too much jazz
    But hippie songs
    Could be heard
    In our pad
    Eddie Rabbitt sang
    About how much
    He loved a rainy night
    Abba, Devo, Benatar
    Were there the day
    John Lennon died
    Mr. Springsteen said
    He had a hungry heart
    Grover Washington
    Was happy on the day
    He topped the charts
    These are the songs

    Chorus:
    These are my heart songs
    They never feel wrong
    And when I wake
    For goodness sake
    These are the songs
    I keep singin'

    Quiet Riot got me started
With the bangin' of my head
    Iron Maiden, Judas Priest
    And Slayer
    Taught me how to shred
    I've got to admit though
    Sometimes
    I would listen
    To the radio
    Debbie Gibson
    Tell me that you think
    We're all alone
    Michael Jackson's
    In the mirror
    I've gotta have faith
    If I wanna see clear
    Never gonna give you up
    Wish me love
    Or wishing well
    It takes two to make
    A thing go right
    If the Fresh Prince
    Starts a fight
    Don't you worry
    For too long
    'Cause you know
    These are the songs

    (Chorus)

    Back in 1991
    I wasn't havin' any fun
    'Till my roommate said
    "Come on and put
    a brand new record on"
    Had a baby on it
    He was naked on it
    Then I heard the chords
    That broke the chains
    I had upon me
    Got together with my bros
    In some rehearsal studios
    Then we played
    Our first rock show
    And watched the fan base
    Start to grow
    Signed the deal that gave
    The dough to make
    A record of our own
    The song come
    On the radio
    Now people go
    This is the song

    These are my heart songs
    They never feel wrong
    And when I wake
    For goodness sake
    These are the songs
    I keep singing

    (4x):
    These are the songs
    I keep singing

oh and The Flaming Lips-"Thank You Jack White (for the Fiber-Optic Jesus That You Gave Me)"

Before she left she made a dashboard confessional
And spilled her guts in cursive but whats worse is
I could still see her bright eyes like sunny day real estate
Oh my and in a funny way the ceiling tastes
    So high but no chance
My little chemical romance left a bad taste in my mouth
But I approached her like hey mercedes why the long face
Why you cryin? theres no need
Just put on this coheed and fallout
Boy meets girl jimmy eat world
But Schlep eats pills till hes all out
Not once not twice she was thrice times a lady
Mackin on brand new, but I had to
Bounce over to the postal service to
Pick up these pills that take care of my nervousness
And all the way I saw planes and mistook 'em for stars
She played games but she took em too far
    At the drive in
Watching soft porn and you can tell
By the trail of the dead, that there was somethin in the popcorn
I hop in my cab destination midtown
Just to get up with some kids that like to get down
I'd made my rounds and that was that
In between the frowns and scraps and heart attacks
And I remember I seen her ass in early november
On a Thursday taking back Sunday for a refund
She shot a wink like no hard feelings
Then she jetted to brazil man them pills had me spun
