Who Wants to Play Celebrity Name Drop?
-
Artist:
-
Album:
-
Track:
The game is simple. The rules are easy. You have a week to think about it. Here they are:
1. Pick a song (artist and title) that mentions the name of a celebrity in it. Celebrity can be defined by any famous person - musician, entertainer, politician, writer, etc.
2. The song can drop the celebrity's name in either the title or in the song. 3 points for title and 7 points for somewhere in the song but not in the title.
3. Full names only. Exceptions are Elvis, Madonna, Jesus, etc.
4. Once a celebrity has been name dropped, they're done. So, no multiple songs about Elvis from other Moggers.
5. Multiple name drops from the same band are fine
6. You have a week to think about it and post (5:00 PM EST next Thursday)
7. I'll moderate, but it would be nice to have some folks help confirm the validity of the songs (moreso the songs about...whomever)
My examples follow - pay attention to the format (these are exempt from the game, so no David Bowie, Leonard Cohen or Jude Law {sorry ladies})
(David Bowie, I Love You) Since I was Six - Brian Jonestown Massacre (David Bowie)
- 3 points
Pennyroyal Tea - Nirvana (Leonard Cohen) - 7 points
Jude Law and a Semester Abroad - Brand New - 3 points
Questions?
OK. Cool.
Ready, Set...Begin!!!

Nice work. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Rawk - I didn't even think of Billy Joel. That's insane. I think I'll award 7 points per song just for sanity's sake of scoring. So, when the dust clears, I'll have to listen to The Against Me song. It's great to infuriate Axel
. Rawk - 28
Brand X - Wow. Nice work. Quite creative. Did Wanbli post 1 Dylan song and 2 Weird Al cuts or was that you? Did the song above mention Prince as The Artist Formerly Known As...? Just curious. Your total is 20.
Wanbli - for Weird Al and Dylan, you have 17
August1-Way to go on the Gorillaz stuff! You took out a number of great names in that remix track. 18 points...(all in song titles)???

The Babybird track refers specifically to "the Artist Formerly Known as Prince." (You ain't butter, you ain't harry, you ain't even the artist formerly known as Prince)

From the past 8 hours...
Rawk - OK - 10 points for referencing Rawkus and CD. Great reference there. Your total is now up to 45 points
Sunshine - You get most of the BBoys points because you've got so many songs in your head! No can do on the REM reference although Pavement's The Unseen Power of the Picket Fence sings about REM's legacy and is one of my favorites of theirs. There is a song out there titled Michael Stipe by P...??? Can anyone clarify? It was on a CMJ comp. years ago. Total points: 71
Contraband has 7 points.
Don't forget to con't looking at through all of these references and yes, Bold is Very Good
Another:

Cody B's Parliment reference:

Just to be clear (from earlier), regardless of what you believe, Jesus was historically proven to have lived - so in essence, he is a famous person and not mythological.
Onto the points
Sunshine - pulling out some good ones. I didn't even know Clutch had a song titled Willie Nelson. My college roommate was/is big into Clutch still! 98 points
Contraband - 24 points
Cody B. - 7 points, R&B and hip-hop are great places to check for this sort of stuff...
Brand X - I'll pass on Frances Farmer...refers to Frances Bean...but great job finding some good ones. You're in the lead. 119 points.
Still have some time. PS - vacation begins for me in about 24 hours so we'll extend this till I return - next Saturday 7/26
Sunshine - 105 points!
So why do bands referenced in lyrics not count as famous musicians? That doesn't make sense to me but then again it's your game Eric, lol. Fun game though.
As far as I understand it, the Nirvana song actually refers to the actress, Frances Farmer, but it is your call as to if it counts.
Everclear - Otis Redding
The Embarassment - Elizabeth Montgomery's Face
Los Lobos - Buddy Ebsen Loves the Night TIme
Ryan Adams - Sylvia Plath
August... I don't think he realized they were in the song. He probably thought you were just throwing bands out there, trying to cheat or something. : P
Simon & Garfunkel - Mrs.Robinson (Joe Dimaggio)
And because its funky friday, Dyke & The Blazers - We Got More Soul
(Ray Charles,James Brown,Johnnie Taylor,Aretha Franklin,Nancy Wilson,Pearl Bailey)
minutemen - History Lesson pt. 2 (mike watt, E. Bloom, richard hell, John Doe, joe strummer and bob dylan, but they've both already been covered here)
I would suggest a revision to the second round of this (to make it more challeging) would be to eliminate both artist name dropped and the artist who name dropped them. Speaking as on who used Dylan, who was cited a number of times, I think it would be more challenging to have to double check or cross refference both from the list.
Example: My Bob Dylan entry would cross both Alicia Keyes and Bob Dylan off the list. Perhaps a shorter play version with these rules?
Just a suggestion, as another mogger who like to create games...
If it references a band member, that counts but if it's just a band name, that's not a celebrity, that's pushing it a little (lots of songs referencing The Bealtes and such...). Does that make sense...?
OK. I like Contraband's round 2 suggestion so let's cancel out acts/bands/artists who have been mentions (yikes, this is getting tough). From this point on, everything mentioned is in foul territory.
Brand X, thanks for the explanation on Frances Farmer - wasn't aware that was referring to a person. You get credit for that. 141 points and the lead.
Cody B - Mrs. Robinson is so blatent but I never even recalled Joe Dimaggio was name dropped in that, 21 points.
As an aside, I invite you to play Wormhole!, my Mog created game. But I do enjoy your game, there is so much potential for this one.
Next entry:
Chuck E. Weiss feat. Tom Waits - "Do You Know What I Idi Amin" (Idi Amin) Both in title and in the song.
Sweet Soul Music - Arthur Conley
(Lou Rawls, Sam + Dave, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, James Brown)
Archie Bell and the Drells - "Tighten Up" . Hi everybody, we're Archi Bell and the Drells..."
(double points for name checking yourself?
The Game - "The Game" - he mentions 18 people including himself, Dre, Easy E, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston and a bunch of other people I'm too lazy to look up. But surely it wins a hip-hop crown for most people mentioned in one tune.
Oh oh a game! Yay!
Do these count?
The Wombats - Let's Dance To Joy Division
Bondage Fairies - He-man (har har)
Shit I forgot about this..........
The Games Pain.......how many emcee's must get mentioned?
See, ever since the day I got the chance to make a change
I’ve been in this game, it’s a new day
And I’m making it known ’cause I just want the world to know
I’m paying my dues, and I got the utmost, I just wanna let you know
I’m payin’ homage ’cause you’ve paved the way for me, yeah
The Game
I swear to God, it feel like every day is my birthday
Let the top down, California’s my birthplace

“Juicy” had us feeling like we was from New York
And that’s real shit blazed the Philly
It’s summertime shout out to Will Smith
’cause who didn’t wanna be the Fresh Prince
Flat top, gold chain and some fresh kicks?
My nigga Nas told me money make the world go round
And Uncle Luke showed me how to make my girl go down
I’ve been around Hip Hop since ‘85
She had her ups and downs but she stayed alive
I used to think LL stood for Love LA
He from Queens, how the f**k he put that with Cool J?
Red Kangol hat, red sweat suit to match
Red Adidas, nigga, Game is back
Keyshia Cole
And ever since the day I got the chance to make a change
I’ve been in this game, it’s a new day
And I’m making it known ’cause I just want the world to know
I’m paying my dues, and I got the utmost, I just wanna let you know
I’m payin’ homage ’cause you’ve paved the way for me, yeah
The Game
Public Enemy and N.W.A is on my boombox, had to say
Yoday was a good day, had the hood buzzin’
Ice Cube my favorite rapper, y’all niggaz can’t tell me nothin’
Everybody’s first bootleg was Boyz ‘n the Hood
Whoever thought gangsta rap would make noise in the hood
When the cars ride by with the boomin’ system
Two door Mustang and the roof was missing
Every girl at ya school had the new extensions
Even gangstaz was dancin’ like New Edition
’cause the house parties stayed rockin’ all night
Niggas came through and shot it up but it was alright
’cause after the cops left, it was a party then
You down with OPP, then bring Naughty in
They say it never rain in southern California, Tony Toni lied
Sit back, watch Game throw his money in the sky
Keyshia Cole
And ever since the day I got the chance to make a change
I’ve been in this game, it’s a new day
And I’m making it known ’cause I just want the world to know
I’m paying my dues, and I got the utmost, I just wanna let you know
I’m payin’ homage ’cause you’ve paved the way for me, yeah
The Game
Cash rules everything around me, C.R.E.A.M get the money
In the back, I relax with all the hunnies
DJ bring it back, let it go
Mix it in with Black Rob, make ‘em say whoa
Every thing full circle, Game livin’ major
Girls on my hip like a Skytel pager
Now I’m on the top, let the champagne pop
Throw ya hands in the sky ’cause The Game don’t stop
Just a little more change, gotta Benz and the Range
Every rap metaphor always ends in my name:
The Kool Hercs, DJ Red Alerts
Before I was born they was talking ’bout The Game
Ask a Jay-Z fan ’bout Big Daddy Kane
Don’t know him, Game gonna show ‘em
Just like they showed me, my lyrics is O.G
When it’s all said and done, you niggas gon’ quote me
Keyshia Cole
And ever since the day I got the chance to make a change
I’ve been in this game, it’s a new day
And I’m making it known ’cause I just want the world to know
I’m paying my dues, and I got the utmost, I just wanna let you know
I’m payin’ homage ’cause you’ve paved the way for me, yeah
Keyshia Cole
See, Mary J. I want you to understand
you paved the way .. for me
I’m givin’ homage .. to you
AND HOW IN THE HELL DO I ONLY HAVE 45 POINTS, I POSTED WE DIDNT START THE FIRE!
Weezer-"Heart Songs"
Gordon Lightfoot
Sang a song
About a boat
That sank in the lake
At the break
Of the morning
A Cat named Stevens
Found a faith
He could believe in
And Joan Baez
I never listened
Too much jazz
But hippie songs
Could be heard
In our pad
Eddie Rabbitt sang
About how much
He loved a rainy night
Abba, Devo, Benatar
Were there the day
John Lennon died
Mr. Springsteen said
He had a hungry heart
Grover Washington
Was happy on the day
He topped the charts
These are the songs
Chorus:
These are my heart songs
They never feel wrong
And when I wake
For goodness sake
These are the songs
I keep singin'
Quiet Riot got me started
With the bangin' of my head
Iron Maiden, Judas Priest
And Slayer
Taught me how to shred
I've got to admit though
Sometimes
I would listen
To the radio
Debbie Gibson
Tell me that you think
We're all alone
Michael Jackson's
In the mirror
I've gotta have faith
If I wanna see clear
Never gonna give you up
Wish me love
Or wishing well
It takes two to make
A thing go right
If the Fresh Prince
Starts a fight
Don't you worry
For too long
'Cause you know
These are the songs
(Chorus)
Back in 1991
I wasn't havin' any fun
'Till my roommate said
"Come on and put
a brand new record on"
Had a baby on it
He was naked on it
Then I heard the chords
That broke the chains
I had upon me
Got together with my bros
In some rehearsal studios
Then we played
Our first rock show
And watched the fan base
Start to grow
Signed the deal that gave
The dough to make
A record of our own
The song come
On the radio
Now people go
This is the song
These are my heart songs
They never feel wrong
And when I wake
For goodness sake
These are the songs
I keep singing
(4x):
These are the songs
I keep singing
oh and The Flaming Lips-"Thank You Jack White (for the Fiber-Optic Jesus That You Gave Me)"
Oh, I am not done yet!
"Taxi Driver"
I took cutie for a ride in my deathcab
She tipped me with a kiss I dropped her off at the meth lab
Before she left she made a dashboard confessional
And spilled her guts in cursive but whats worse is
I could still see her bright eyes like sunny day real estate
Oh my and in a funny way the ceiling tastes
So high but no chance
My little chemical romance left a bad taste in my mouth
But I approached her like hey mercedes why the long face
Why you cryin? theres no need
Just put on this coheed and fallout
Boy meets girl jimmy eat world
But Schlep eats pills till hes all out
Not once not twice she was thrice times a lady
Mackin on brand new, but I had to
Bounce over to the postal service to
Pick up these pills that take care of my nervousness
And all the way I saw planes and mistook 'em for stars
She played games but she took em too far
At the drive in
Watching soft porn and you can tell
By the trail of the dead, that there was somethin in the popcorn
I hop in my cab destination midtown
Just to get up with some kids that like to get down
I'd made my rounds and that was that
In between the frowns and scraps and heart attacks
And I remember I seen her ass in early november
On a Thursday taking back Sunday for a refund
She shot a wink like no hard feelings
Then she jetted to brazil man them pills had me spun
This is the story of the year right here
This is hot water music
Put ya ramen into it
I don't know what I just walked into. So I'm not going to read everyone's respeonse because I don't have an hour. I'm just going to name drop and hope it flies.
