The Radiohead Conspiracy - In Rainbows is MIA

Posted 3 months ago

As much as I'd like to defuse any thought that I'm being blackballed from playing my legit purchase of Radiohead's In Rainbows, I cannot deny the fact that the songs are present (in a folder, clearly labeled, in my iTunes w/o an exclamation mark). In Rainbows refuses to play in my iTunes, Media Player, Quicktime...anything. The songs are listed but just won't play. I can play anything from Kid A. The Bends. I can even play the Rainy Day remixes and Jaydiohead. No problems, but In Rainbows? No way.

I was one of the millions to pick a price and pay early. I picked $10 for In Rainbows. Could it be that the songs have disappeared from my hard drive? Maybe Radiohead hit the "Easy" button and made the In Rainbow songs disappear? I doubt it but if there's an explanation out there, I'd like to hear it.

I did notice that I have not listened to Radiohead "In Rainbows" since August 2008!

Help?

God in all of his infinite wisdom, is doing mother earth a huge service, and erradicating all traces of the very average band Radiohead from all forms of media...

Ghost....you'd better watch out man.  He put 'em here and they're actually on his playlist. (we hang a lot!)

Eric.  interesting.  my stuff plays as well, including the stems for a Nude Remix and the live "I Might be Wrong" tracks.  i can't for the life of me figure out which computer has "In Rainbows" on it, but i got burned on that one in a completely different manner.  I Tivo'd the broadcast on DirecTV, which was awesome and marked it "never delete".  When DirecTV upgraded it's antennas, my recorder had to go and i lost a ton of hard to get music stuff.  that's today for ya!

speaking of which, here's another story you might get a kick out of.  several years ago, i Tivo'd the Grammy show as i watched it here in LA.  Celine Dion came out to sing and her mic wasn't on.  you heard a tech voice backstage speaking on the proper mic that she was never handed and after she stopped singing, a guy in a suit came out and handed her the proper mic to a round of applause.  after take 2 of the piano intro, she pointed to her in ear monitors as if she couldn't hear them.  she yanked them out and after a brief feedback whistle sang the song without them as a real trooper.

the next day, my friend Lili Haydn had been playing with Parliament on the show and she was at my house so i played the Tivo of her performance and then told her about Celine's episode.  i went to play it for her, and even though it had not been edited for the west coast feed of the event that i watched and recorded, they had zapped my Tivo with an edited version!  Celine came out, there was a close up of the piano player during her entrance vocals and then they cut to her for the rest of the song.  no mic probs, no guy in suit, and when you saw her the in-ears were already out.  it was amazing to see.

don't know if this is related to what happened to your Radiohead tracks and if i ever find mine i'll let you know if i have the same problem.  interesting "big brother" story though, eh?

That's pretty strange. So is that Tivo incident, Robin. Don't tell me big brother is infiltrating what we have on our DVRs? If I'd kept the AMA telecst, perhaps they would have wiped it of Adam Lambert's whole performance, hoping I wouldn't miss it (I wouldn't).

Eric, until you find the tracks, you can listen here. I think they are all there for you.

    MTV to the rescue?

Great story Robin.  I bet there's a correlation.  Technology is the end of us (semi-kidding).

MTV to the rescue, indeed.  What does the "M" stand for these days?  More reality?

Couldn't get through the link (maybe I've gotta be logged in???) but I did find someone who own the physical CD.  I re-ripped and bam!  The songs are back w/ the same # of plays!

Easy fix that worked for me (thanks to sirshannon on the Apple forum):

    1. Select all In Rainbow-songs

    2. Rightclik

    3. Select "convert ID3 tags"

    4. Chose version 1.0

    5. Play your music
