This woman is just amazing....just this tiny gelfling of a girl and a HUGE harp...I heard the "Book of Right On" a while ago and it grew on me. It seemed to take root somewhere in the right brain, growing next to the Bjork and Fionna Apple songs that I can't live without. This song was strange and quirky, considering the source, and I took a keen liking to it.Then I checked out "Sprout and the Bean".Beautiful....Really these songs are great ...if you can get past her...well....her voice. She sounds like what Bjork would sound like if she lost a third of her range and gargled gasoline twice a day...But if you keep listening it grows on you. Because it is sooo unique. So when she came to town, my wife and I decided we would go and see her.She played her whole new album "Ys" front to back...with a band. She worked with Van Dyke Parks on this album...which is cool because I'm a big fan of Brian Wilson's "Smile" which he worked on.Steve Albini also tracked Joanna's harp on this album.Anyways...check it out yourself. One of the most amazing shows I have ever seen...I was entranced the whole time, and I had never heard this new album. There were only five songs ranging from, let's say, 10 to 15 minutes a piece, but they were wonderful! This is a concept album. A fairy tale if you will.

  1. Anonymous says Emortis9 sez, "Really these songs are great …if you can get past her…well….her voice" Please keep in mind, Emortis9: this is but one man’s opinion: Her voice sounds ridiculous. Is affected a strong enough adjective? Oh, no. Not by a long shot. Gee, Joanna, do you think you could work one more quirk into your singing? No. I don’t believe that’s possible. You used ‘em all up. You cleaned the plate. On the other hand, the incredible Steve Albini works with her, so I look forward to the day when I think back on this post and laugh my ass off at how wrong I was about her.

  2. deadmandeadman says Ya really can't appreciate a fine wine until ya educate your pallette. Like so many unique talents in the music world, miss Newsome takes a little (alot!!) gettin' used to. The payoff is worth it.
