Digging Through Boxes

Halfway into falling asleep for a much needed nap, I was possessed with a sudden desire to resurrect my old Thinkpad and connect it to the internet. There are two reasons for this. First, when I threw it in a box three years ago after getting my Powerbook, I abandoned all of my files on it. Pictures, music, papers were all tossed aside like so many used tissues. Secondly, I wanted to see if I could do it. Why the urge came over me today when I had important napping/recovering to do, I have no idea. I had to search through multiple closets before I found it tucked under some papers. I harvested a wireless card from my roommate's dead laptop and booted up. Now, this computer has some history. I used Windows for a few months before deciding to try out Linux. I used both before switching entirely to Linux due to the large numbers on campus of both viruses for Windows and sweet guys willing to be my tech support. These events lead to a partition not only of my harddrive, but my music as well. I had the old old stuff, not listened to for nearly 5 years on the NT side. I found embarrassing stuff like Dashboard Confessional and Black Lab, as well as Mazzy Star and Rasputina on there. The merely 'old' stuff that I hadn't seen in about three years was on the Mandrake side. I hooked the ol' thing up to my stereo and hit play on XMMS (a Linux music player). "The Wanton Machine":http://wmucradio.com/station/shows/113 (my radio show on WMUC) circa October 3, 2003 started playing. Listening to old music is like revisiting a pocket of time. I have included the setlist so you can reminisce with me about college radio just a few short years ago.1 phoenix-- too young2 tv on the radio-- mr. grieves3 verve/remix-- do what you wanna4 junior senior-- rhythm bandits5 great shakes-- we do as we please6 the fever-- bridges and tunnel7 future bible heros-- hopeless (remix)8 david bowie-- new killer star9 outrageous cherry-- (i know) you're both of me10 lilys-- squares11 nervous and the kids-- ordinary lead12 mink lungs-- men in belted sweaters13 the dandy warhols-- relax14 the atomiks-- i got the news15 the dandy warhols-- scientist16 clinic-- come into our room17 eels-- dirty girl18 the rapture-- house of jealous lovers19 the carlsonics-- tonight we dine on fumes20 super furry animals-- venus and serena21 the proles-- queen22 the radiant boy-- gospel nite club23 metric-- the list24 guided by voices-- i'll replace you with machines25 my morning jacket-- masterplan26 beat happening-- foggy eyes27 the wrens-- per second second28 arcade fire-- old flameThere are some gems in there. I recently revisited my love for "The Carlsonics":http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/carlsonics/artist.jhtml (and singer Aaron Carlson) after discovering the awesomeness of their new incarnation, "Nethers":http://www.myspace.com/nethers, during their recent DC show with Dungen. The a capella TV On the Radio cover of "Mr. Grieves" is haunting and sticks in my head. In fact, I "named a squirrel Mr. Grieves":http://flickr.com/photos/thewantonmachine/114120016/ after hearing it the first time. I played Arcade Fire before everyone loved them for Funeral! Bleeding edge of indie music, that is. Right.Ultimately, I only got the wireless card to work for the Windows side. Looking for forum support to make the old Netgear WG511v.1 (taiwan chip, not china) work with my ancient Linux kernel is begging someone to ask, "Are you from the past?":http://www.cafepress.com/kskdesign.49478109Today I am.
