2007 has been a great year for music so far, with a lot of expected greatness and a few surprises (at least for me). First of all, I'm pretty sure that Of Montreal's new one is going to be my party album for quite some time. Start to finish, it's perfect for getting ready, drinking up a storm, playing Circle of Death, dancing madly for no reason...everything a Saturday night entails, really. It's fun and accessible enough to appeal to anyone who wanders by, while still being muscially interesting enough to keep my attention.
On the other hand, I find The Shins "Wincing the Night Away" kind of disappointing. I do like it as a whole. In fact, I'd been underwhelmed by Phantom Limb until I heard it in the context of the album, which somehow gave the track a lot more weight. And I really like the song Sea Legs, which Pitchfork criticized as being reminiscent of Eve 6 (I don't see it). Other than that, though, there aren't really many standout tracks. I find myself deleting the songs off of playlists because they don't fit and I end up skipping them.
The album that came out of left field for me, though, was Kristin Hersh's "Learn to Sing Like a Star." I'd never really heard of her before, although I like Throwing Muses. But after giving a couple of her tracks a listen (I think I got them off of Dreams of Horses), I fell in love and got more. Songs like In Shock, Vertigo, Winter, and Nerve Endings have me pressing repeat. It's pretty surprising, especially because I normally don't really care for female singers for some reason. This album is amazing, though. Anyone else digging it?
