I know that this song has probably been discussed a million times here on MOG. And, I know i'm probably appealing to a different crowd than what I would normally write about, but I am madly in love.
Estelle's american boy is perhaps one of the most epic songs of 2008, (or 2007 ... it just runs on and on!) But this song can never get old!! I would consider myself a serious non-fan of "r&b", completely and utterly (minus mary j and all that good stuff...) . I just don't like it at all... but this tune is THE BOMB! Every time I listen to it it gets better and better. I can forsee this being played 20 years down the road and everyone knowing every word to it.
Also, as a UK perspective, this song is BLAZING!! Working at Nike, its played at least once a day, and you hear it all over, shops, radio, clubs (even in shoredtich!) . It attracts all sorts of strange fans too, the metal heads at work love it and can bond over the beauty of it with the hood rats.
Does anyone else feel the same way? Do you all love American Boy? Do kanye's slick raps give you a giggle too? (before he speak his suit bespoke).
Tell me your thoughts...

It's a cop-out by Estelle to pander to the American market in such a way, and John Legend has to shoulder most of the blame. She came from a much more poetic and authentic starting point with her last album and the lead single ("1980, the year that God made me"), so to hear her new coffee-table/nursery-rhyme efforts really grate with this listener. She could have been the UK's very own Lauryn Hill, but on this evidence she's just another Mariah wannabe.
i love it. loved the whole Shine album and still spin it. there is also a Bassline remix of this song, if yer into bumpin' techno/house style stuff.
Terry, I reckon she could go back to Lauryn status, she's got the skill, I reckon she's just putting it out there, getting things flowing. Its very different than her earlier stuff indeed, but still hellla catchy!
Cheers for that mollifire, worth checking out!
Still a goodie for sure. You should look up older stuff that Terry mentions. If I remember correctly, an older video of hers shows Estelle was a rapping a bit more back then.
DIG! this is nice..
chick looks hella hard in this video, like she's today's estelle's younger punk kid sis :)
