WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Afro *Late 70's* Joni

Posted about 1 year ago
As a long time Joni Mitchell fan, ( I enhereted all of my mother's LP when I was teenager ) I've always been a great fan of all of her classic LP's, Court and Spark, Blue and Clouds. Even lesser known ones like Hejira and the Hissing of Summer Lawns have always been among my favourites. Not until recently have I discovered "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter". At first listen, I thought it was just one of Joni's lost efforts of her later work, where she always seemed to get a bit lost from focus, but after many listens i'm finding that I love it more and more. Songs Dreamland and the title track sound as epic as classic Mitchell tunes like "Case of You" and "Free Man in Paris"The longer tracks on the album show Joni's real versatility as a musician. The afro beats and long jam's are totally fab.Does anyone know anymore about the history of this album?

  1. brittanybf says you inherited your mother's joni lp's not because she has passed but because she gave them to you out of love! just wanted to clear that up. I haven't ever even seen the likes of this Joni album, but if it's anything like the man on the cover with the bird, then I reckon I should "spin it."

  2. Elton Noon says I'd definitely recommend spinning this. Just playing it now, loving the tribal rythms on the end of "The Tenth World"

  3. Elton Noon says Great video, thanks for that! Love Joni's wide guitar strap. Fab. I was wondering if it was similar cast and people from shadows and light. I've got that LP too, and knew that was a famous cast too. And ya, my mom does rule!

  4. Elton Noon says After more listening to this album, and Shadow's and Light, I almost want to argue that this is some of Joni's best stuff. I know the early era of folk and whimsical songs are what she's known for, but there's definitely an air of confidence that she shows in this period which seems to turn out some great tunes. The air of confidence before the got the air of snobbery and 'diva-ism' that she seems to have now.

  5. Elton Noon says Oh me again, on my own post. I was checking out Joni's album releases, and was interested to find out that this album was a follow up to the experimentation in Hejira. I much prefer this to Hejira, the experimentation seems to be more honed and controled and more succesful. Also interesting to see that this was before Mingus and Shadows and Light. Good research Yummy, thanks for that mate!

  6. yummygatalover says You are welcome and anytime of course! I didn't get an email notif on the comments you put after.. Some days they get sent hours later for some reason. Which hasn't happened yet by the way...let's see if it works for you. I'm in winnipeg canada and the time is 11.11 !! (haha giwastar would laugh!) when i pressed publish. (i put the time i just after the rest of this) i was just checking my old ones to see if they were fixed yet and made my way back around here by chance! Good thing! I'll have to watch out for that problem. Sheesh that's a lot of clicks though...oh well better late than never right E.N.? huh... i never knew anything about what the snobbery and air of confidence stuff was or is. I'll go look, be right back.. Oh now i see what you're saying...seems she's become more self involved and almost closed herself off to the world. Visual art without selling it or displaying it? hmm i can see keeping it all to yourself but ..no more live performances too. oh well. i wonder what caused all this huh? Self imposed exile almost. Im the same as you i love the five albums that have made their way on to your post the most... I love Jaco's Bass playing he was a monster!

  7. Elton Noon says No worries about being late... I'm all over the place with posting. Plus i'm in London so the time difference is wackey. Thats exactly what I mean, her kind of too big for her britches effect. She's very affected these days. I saw her on Charley Rose and it wasn't what I pictured of her at all. I suppose if you've had a life producing so much great work, a big head comes with it. But, with that said she's still the best. All of my LP's are in the US and I want to hear all those albums ... think im going to go down FOPP to see if they have them on the 5£ sale, that would be genius! Jaco's bass is really amazing. Love seeing him from the shadows and light stuff too.
