WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Those in the know still love Darondo

I'm a little late to the Darondo party but hey, I'm part Italian -- we always run a little late. This Bay Area singing sensation from the 70's (say that 10 times fast) produced some wicked soul music in his day. His music was forgotten over the years and then recently re-discovered by Gilles Peterson. While I was exploring Darondo's spectacularly soulful sounds, I also discovered the wise words of Darondo in "this article":http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/02/12/PKGTKGV0MS1.DTL from the SF Gate.h3. Darondo on rumors he made his living from pimping, not music:bq. "It might have appeared that I was doing that, but I wasn't,"bq. ...though he admits women also gave him money...bq. "If you just want to ride up and down the street and give me some money, then fine. If you want to stay in my house and contribute to me, fine. They was trying to help me out with the rent."h3. Darondo on doing his own thingbq. "The captain of the ship said, 'Stay with the group,' but every place we went, I left the group," he says. "I wanted to see what was going on. ... I figured, I'm bad -- I'm Darondo."h3. Links to samples of Darondo: (I recommend "How I Got Over" and "Didn't I")"Darondo on Dancetracksdigital":http://www.dancetracksdigital.com/search/?KEYWORD=darondo"Darondo on iTunes":http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=119445958&s=143441&i=119445881
