MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

Good f'ing morning, all.

Well, well. It has been a seriously trippy two and a half months, and I awake to see a Mog-o-shfeer I hardly recognize (indeed, let me tell you younguns about the days when we used to say "Mog-o-sphere," "twenty-three skidoo" and "somebody get all these f'ing dodo birds out of my driveway"). Still and all, it is good to be back, and I hope I can get an amen out of the two of you who read this.Other than the promise of musical carnage in the up and coming World Mog War, I am thoroughly having a ball discovering the modern psychedelic movement. My pal Josh hipped me to Flaming Lips' "Clouds Taste Metallic" at the end of last year, and since then, I have also been blessed with the discovery of the Elephant Six collective. I already knew of the unfathomably great Neutral Milk Hotel, but who could have guessed that so many bands that all know each other could all be so kick ass?I know not a whole hell of a lot of you out there are really into the psychedelia (with a few notable exceptions), but for me, a serious addict who has burned through most of the vintage stuff he has heard of (oh, where have you gone, RevUp64?), the discovery of a genuine modern psychedelic movement would be like finding out John Lennon had a kid who inherited his talent (okay, that was a bit brutal; I actually like "Friendly Fire" but, well, screw it). Currently sitting through my second consecutive spin of Circulatory System, and I can feel its feel-good virus taking over. Oh, sweet weirdness, take me away like a spinning Calgon-filled marmalade vortex.Anyhoo, my kid just woke up and needs me to fetch the "disc darts" that came with the Spiderman gun I bought him today. Life is good. More on other stuff later, presumably.

  1. Rawkkiddoh says the mog-o-sphere may look different, but check out mog tv......that is addictive

  2. tybees says Amen brother. Definitely tell us more about this Elephant Six stuff....I know it's there but have never really heard much of it.

  3. El Monko and Son says making this place more addictive? yikes... And Tybs, my real obsessions are NMH, Olivia Tremor Control and Circulatory System. Full of the multitextured, sweeping, queasy harmonies and idiosynchratic instruments and time signatures I adore. I only have one album by each (Dusk at Cubist Castle and Circulatory System, respectively), and they are killer, so I intend to sweep up some more. Next, I must check out "Of Montreal." I hear nothing but good about them, and Apples In Stereo as well (their newest just got four stars in RS; yeah, I read their reviews--I am so unhip). All of this is off of emusic, which I know you are into, so it is a good cheap way to explore all of this. Also, just discovered the Soft Boys. A bit poppier, and not as lush, but also terrific. Very Syd Barrett-meets-the-modern-age.

  4. tybees says Sweet, I've still got a handful of downloads left this month. I heard an Apples' song a few weeks back and was bored, but I keep meaning to give the whole record a spin anyway. I'll throw OTC & CS on the list!, too.

  5. kristiana says Yaaa, welcome back! I should really get back to this beer sitting beside me, and reassert my status as ping pong queen, but before I do (friday nights at Casa Kristiana are hot, you wanna believe it!)... maybe check out moggers "Magdalenus" and Andrew Lau, they might have some suggestions. Nice guys too.

  10. B42 says "looking at me with a smile on your face, like you'd rather be seein' me dead, lying on the floor with a hole in my face and a ten gauge shotgun at my head, rollin' on, won't be long, I won't leave here 'til I sing this song..." (jorma - trial by fire)
