Do You Have a Theme Song?

Posted over 2 years ago
I'm not just talking about a favorite song. I'm talking about a favorite song that seems to encapsulate important aspects of your personality. The song that would play when your character first walked in in the movie of your life. The song that you will play every day when you have your own radio show. Sure, it's a bit of an egotistical affectation to have one, but, hey, that's me. In fact, I have, at various times and places considered three different songs to be a suitable theme song for my bad self.3) Epic by Faith No More. Cool, mysterious, rocking, striving for meaning. It is number three because, well, I'm not really that cool.2) Hocus Pocus by Focus The only song that really kicks ass and is really silly at the same time. Suits me well. But the real answer is...1) Monkey Man by the Rolling Stones. I dig the Trickster character in literature and in my life, and that is what this song is all about. It totally shreds, the Stones were "my first band" (age seven), and, I happen to have a bit of a thing for monkeys.I don't expect everyone to be silly enought to have thought about this already, but give it a shot if you will. It's like reading your own zodiac. And if, like me, you sit around thinking about things like this during important department meetings, I expect to hear from you.

  1. Dale says Figures your theme song would come from an album entitled Let It Bleed. I'll give this some thought (likely during my department meeting) and get back to you.

  2. Anna says I once asked a similar question; sill...erm..evil minds think alike. Garbage - Why Do You Love Me "I'm no Barbie doll I'm not your baby girl I've done ugly things And I have made mistakes And I am not as pretty as those girls in magazines I am rotten to my core if they're to be believed You're not some little boy Why you acting so surprised? You're sick of all the rules Well I'm sick of all your lies Now I've held back a wealth of shit I think I'm gonna choke I'm standing in the shadows With the words stuck in my throat" It's not like this is me 100% all the time, but I've experienced every little thing it describes :)

  3. Takeshi Kovacs says Whenever the cops want to know my name - I say, Col. Steve Austin. My theme would be the Theme song to the Six Million Dollar Man, AND I get all the nasty sound effects to - like the jump sound effect gets to be my ring tone, and the running sound effect gets to be my love making theme song - cuz I'm strong but super human fast - nnnnaaaaannnaaaaa. :)

  4. Terry Staunton says Never given it much thought until I read your post, but the song I was playing at the time was Monkey To Man by Elvis Costello. I think that'll do for now, as it's got a bit of a swagger, it's slightly self-mocking, and can't help but make you smile. It's also got a killer guitar riff at the start, which I can picture blasting away as I walk into a room. Lyrically, the song argues that the human race is almost entirely comprised of idiots and morons. Hmm, maybe that fits me tooooooo perfectly...

  5. ChiaraSera says Oh i love this post! I love thinking of the music I listen to as being the soundtrack to my life. Every person who has touched my heart has their own song! Mine depends on the day: When I'm feeling like the hopeless romantic that I truly am at heart: The Postal Service- Clark Gable: "I want so badly to believe there is truth; that love is real" but when I'm feeling more hopefully romantic it's Maria Taylor's Song Beneath the Song.

  7. El Monko and Son says Dale, think on, thinking guy! Anna, that's heavy. I think the complex nature of your personality demands multiple themesongs. Tak, how many cops out there know you as Steve Austin? And how many foxy ladies have had their treadmills melted by you? Terry, I think we should unite and form a massive monkey army. I have no interest in conquering the world (although a few radio stations would be nice), but perhaps a massive feces-flinging invasion of Congress and Parliament. Wait, maybe they would not notice any extra feces flinging.

  9. Dale says Right now, since I'm apparently such a devious sort to get people addicted to bad music, I'm going to select "According To Plan" by ILYBICD, because my dream of turning people on to Mew, among other bands, has gone swimmingly. Too bad I can't find the lyrics, tho. And the bassline at the beginning ... I so want that as my into music.

  11. Takeshi Kovacs says They never know my alias as the six million dollar man, they think I'm in the military and suffering from some wartime malady. I play right to it. I melt treadmills like Chuck Norris - better, stronger, faster - in bed. Taught by the best - Oscar Goldman.

  12. brand X says It's always been pretty much a toss up for me between the Pixies' Tony's Theme and Devo's Mongoloid. I asked a friend to help me decide a couple years ago and she said they were both good choices, and that Mongoloid was a superior song, but Tony's Theme was more subtle. I'm not sure what she was driving at.

  13. El Monko and Son says Dale, you are truly a member of the Council of Evil. Amy, I'm going to have to figure out what that means. Tak, I'm sure you're thanking the Academy every night! (that was intended as a vague sexual innuendo based on the name Oscar) brand X, I don't know either. But your choices indicate you are a weird dude. Kudos.

  21. HarrySue says Harriet's Got a Song... spent the whole of my teenaged years wishing there was a song with my name in it, but when you can only rhyme with charriot, it just doesn't seem likely. Fast forward a couple of decades and suddenly some guy named Ben Kweller's done it and forever earned a place of high esteem in my musical hall of fame. Just want to know what exactly a "satchel purse" is???
    Permalink posted 01/10/2007
  22. El Monko and Son says It is actually a bit of a redundant term. A satchel is a small bag, either carried by hand or slung over the shoulder. I suppose the implication is that it is a small purse, rather than a large one. And, yeah, that's a relief. The next rhyme down the list would have to be Judas Iscariot, and that is not much fun.

One year it was Limp Bizkit's "My Way":http://www.lyrics007.com/Limp%20Bizkit%20Lyrics/My%20Way%20Lyrics.html (say what you will, that song is powerful, man) and last year it was Peaches' I'm the Kinda (meh, I didn't live up to that standard _at all_). Hmm, contenders for this year...I'm thinking Spoon's "My Mathematical Mind":http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/My-Mathematical-Mind-lyrics-Spoon/4033AC8498249629482570200028A6E0 (My mathematical mind can see the breaks /So I'm gonna stop riding the brakes...Instead I'm gonna see mistakes). Or maybe CSS' "Music is My Hot, Hot Sex":http://www.seeklyrics.com/lyrics/Cansei-De-Ser-Sexy/Music-Is-My-Hot-Hot-Sex.html or J. Mayer's cover of "Bold As Love":http://www.lyricsfreak.com/j/jimi+hendrix/bold+as+love_20071546.html ...yep, the rest of my afternoon is shot to hell now- thanks, El Monko.

Cuz we all want a happy ending But we’re tired of children’s books We’re tired of feeling useless And we’re tired of dirty looks I swear we used to feel things Or at least we cried real tears We used to say I’m sorry But we haven’t now for years So forgive us of our sins Before we make our move Let us die in peace So we never have to choose
