Esoteric Instruments (aka Best Bagpipes Ever)

Posted over 3 years ago
I am currently in the midst of a new obsession with this album. I have only recently discovered its existence (thanks, Fastnbulbous), and I feel like the last guy on Earth (or at least MOG) to get in on the secret. I definitely have a full-length post in me about it, and it will probably get longer each time I listen to it. But for now, I will just say: Best Bagpipes Ever.It has made me contemplate a few other awards for esoteric instrumentation:French horn: "My Wife" by the WhoMarimba: "Under My Thumb" by the StonesCello: "Talk About the Passion" by REM (I am a real sucker for cello, so, really, there are probably many)Oboe: "Feel Too Good" by The MoveGregorian Chant: "Bodhisattva Vow" by the Beastie BoysSaw:(at least I'm pretty sure that's what is going on there): "Delicate" by Damien RiceSitar:"Nobody's Fault But My Own," by BeckI really wish I could think of a good song with a digeridoo it, but, oh well. Little help?

  1. champy says The theremin in "Good Vibrations" from the Beach Boys. P.S. one of my favorite songs of all time!

  2. champy says Not the digeridoo, but strange instrument nonetheless...

  3. Wanbli says Didgeridoo is heavy in Kate Bush's "The Dreaming"

  4. El Monko and Son says d0gstar--Sounds cool. I will check out your post and the book if I can find it. And Champy, To-tally. Good Vibrations just blows me away more, the older I get. Good call on the theremin! I would love to hear any votes for favorite esoteric instruments.

  5. El Monko and Son says Wanbli- I am undereducated on Ms. Bush. I will have to check it out.

  6. Wanbli says A song that has a killer bagpipe riff *and* sitar is Dream by Forest for the Trees (Carl Stephenson)

  7. El Monko and Son says It goes on my shopping list now.

  8. vacasmagras says Rolf Harris is the guy who had the famous song in the 60's Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport. In the early 80's he did a terrific version of Stairway to Heaven, complete with digeridoo. (Of course, mate!) The success of this single led to an album called Stairways to Heaven which has 22 different covers of Stairway to Heaven. My favorites are a version by a group called the Rock Lobsters and another by Vegeimite Reggae.

  9. El Monko and Son says Oh, yeah! I saw him on "It's a Wiggly, Wiggly World," a really great world music intro for little kids. I know some people have an aversion to the Wiggles, but there is some terrific music on this collection. Rolf actually discusses the "wobbleboard," the instrument he invented for the song, which gives it that cool wobbly percussive beat. Good call!

  10. ivylander says On the Incredible String Band's hippie odyssey "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter," you can hear gimbri, oud, chahanai, and water harp, among a slew of arcane instrumentation. The trick is in knowing which one they're playing at any given moment.

  11. El Monko and Son says I suspect I would not be able to pull off that trick. I'm not sure I have heard of any of those, except, I think, water harp.

  12. ivylander says Not saying I know that any of them sound like either, except for the oud, which is a Turkish cousin to the lute. Just saying they're there. There must be a song with balalaikas or bouzoukis on it somewhere, just can't think of it right now....

  13. El Monko and Son says Aren't those fun words to say? Oud seems nice, too. I think I'm going to work them more into my everyday conversation. "Nice day for bouzoukis, isn't it?" Cue sound of face being slapped.

  14. ivylander says Benny Hill would know how to make an oud joke. I can't.

  15. ArielX says I love hearing good instrumentation. Two instruments in particular I can't get enough of: harpsichord, and hammered dulcimer. Harpsichord as you hear it in David Bowie's "Station to Station", right in the intro. Barry White made killer use of the harpsichord. Hammered dulcimer? Nobody rocks the dulcimer like Dead Can Dance, though in general, gothic bands do a pretty good job with it: Sisters of Mercy, "Marianne". Gives me chills. Of sheer pleasure.

  16. El Monko and Son says Nice. I am also a fan of the harpsichord breaks in Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play" and Yes' "Close To the Edge." However, I am utterly without a pop music reference point for hammered dulcimer

  17. boozelegs says I seem to recall Jamiroquai using some digeridoo on an older album. I'll have to go digging... I was in a band that recorded a whoppee cushion on a track. Does that count for exotic instrument? :)

  18. El Monko and Son says That is an awesome instrument. I play a similar instrument myself, but few appreciate my genius.
