  1. chandlersford says Ah some great ones there. Badfinger never get the recognition they deserve (Or deserved) very sad story if you look into it. Amazing to think that two other people had hits with this and yet very few people know who wrote it. I'd be interested to see you list which versions you have heard? Good post CF

  2. El Monko and Son says Well, the popular releases were by French Kiss, Santana, Nicolette Larson, Three Dog Night, Nilsson, The Brothers Johnson and Aretha Somebodyorother, respectively. I can't say I am familar with any other versions out there (although I feel a vague possibility that Bob Welch did a solo version of Sentimental Lady), and so I don't even know the second artist to hit with Without You that you speak of. And on the subject of Badfinger, it came down to a fight between them and Skynard for the "hardest luck band of all time" post I did a few months ago. I went with Badfinger. Just got "Head First" this weekend, and so far it is quite awesome.

  3. tybees says Over the years I've been shocked at the number of songs I thought were originals. "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell comes to mind....I know there's more but I can't think right now.

  5. chandlersford says The other 'artist' (and I'm loathed to use that tag) was the bleeting queen of vocal gymnastics Mariah Carey who had a 'hit' with it in 1994. I would recommend the very understated version, and actually the whole LP from Badfinger's No Dice release. I quite like the Santana version - again though, Peter Greens understated beautiful playing and singing is a must. Santana also covered Buddy Holly's Well Alright, as did Blind Faith. Other originals which have been overshadowed by covers would have to include the fragile and lovely I will always love you - cover best forgotton if you can - instead go for Dolly's original. we seem to have to suffer a purpetual barrage of Boy band covers here in the UK. Non of their listening audience have a clue that they are covers (Some probably even believe they wrote them) but then, when you cater for an audience of under 12's they wont know the difference. The favourites of course are Bee Gees, Osmonds and any classic soul ripe for the killing. Keep em coming El Monko & Son!

  6. ivylander says Sorry, EM. My intention had been to post the original - and ridiculously superior - version of Lee Dorsey's "Yes We Can," but for some reason MOG is being obdurate.

  7. El Monko and Son says Tybs, I had no idea Tainted Love was a cover. Cool beans, bro. CF, I apologize for the existence of Mariah Carey. Also, good call with Dolly and Buddy. Ivy, I would say it is being downright recalcitrant and intractable. Can't say I'm really familiar with that song, though. I will inwestigate. Additionally: Cum On Feel the Noize by Slade, and Nothing Compares 2 U by Prince (although I suspect that one may get closer to the "All Along the Watchtower" category, wherein most people do realize it is a cover song).
