Finding the Middle with Santogold

Posted about 1 year ago
From my posts it is apparent that I don't often stray from the music that I prefer - that music being somber alt. country. My cousin often chastises me and tells me that I need to get back to the __middle__, that my "sad bastard" music (a la Jack Black from __High Fidelity__) isn't good for my emotional well-being. I've always ruminated on his advice, but I've struggled to find that __middle__ that he is referring to. I try to seek out non-alt. country bands, but they don't pull me down (in a good way) like Bonnie 'Prince' Billy or Richard Buckner does. I enjoy the pain and misery in each of their songs. Unfortunately I can't find that pain in upbeat songs (Wilco's "Via Chicago" being an exception). So today, I woke up, and it wasn't raining. What does one do in Portland when it isn't raining? First off, I made another attempt at finding that __middle__. Is this it?Enjoy Santogold. Here's the official video.http://www.myspace.com/santogold

  1. fistula spume says I've been struggling to stop listening to Japanese music lately but I figure I just got to get it out of my system. I like this Santogold but do you think her voice has a twinge of alt-country to it? It's hard to find upbeat music that makes you feel sorry for yourself. There is a lot of pop music that depresses me but that isn't the same. This is a pretty cool song though. Dude not raining in Portland? I say go outside. While you have the chance.

  2. Augusts1 says Santogold was at Coachella & I hadn't heard of her so didn't check out some of her set. Liking this, wish I'd known about her so I could've listened to at least a few songs. Oh well. So many artists, so little time! At least I know of her now, thanks!

  3. dachmo says I like this Santogold but this song is almost an exact copy of Tegan & Sara's "Walking With A Ghost".

  4. Augusts1 says Not having heard either song I'd have to go with the Santogold. I'd say they are not exact copies but do have similarities Dach. I've not ever been much for T&S though.

  5. dachmo says Oh, you semantic bastage! Keyword was "almost". and since both songs are SIMILAR, I like them both.

  6. Edmund Frost Booth says I think the lesson here is that all music is derivative. But then there's this guy. Oh, Yngwie. And acoustic, too?

  7. dachmo says Sorry, I got a little off tac there, so if alt. country is on one end and your searching for your middle ground where exactly would that other end be located. Is the opposite of maudlin alt country italo-disco? is it be-bop, swing? or is it Norwegian death metal?

  8. Edmund Frost Booth says Dachmo, my spectrum would not go from alt. country to _______ but rather depressing to euphoric. I tend to favor the sadder music and am urged to stray from that realm. My middle ground would then be something more cheerful and upbeat (like Santogold) and the polar opposite of my sad, I guess, would be... "the happiest music on Earth."
