Sampling Nuts

Posted about 1 year ago
One of the first things I encountered on MOG was Cody's Sample This series which served, among other things, to dislodge a couple of random sampling nuggets from my own memory. Thanks to my new vinyl ripping capabilities I am finally able to pass on one such nugget that has been sitting for a while in my "to post" file. What I love about this is that the sample played little to no part in the original song, a 3 second lift from a 12 minute song. But it's a groove though.... I can just picture the beatnuts sitting around, stoned off their gourds and this bass line seemingly comes out of nowhere and then disappears ... leaving them with the makings of a song....I think having you guess the original song would be a bit too hard, although you're welcome to try.... rather I'll post the sampled song and leave it blank and you can guess who it is. Should be easy enough. The sample comes in the first minute of the song, it's clear as day.

  5. brendanhalpin says What software are you using for your vinyl ripping? My USB turntable came with Audacity, which I find kinda cumbersome...

  6. Dzendvokh says You know it Sam, but you're not tellin?....... Ok the sample comes exactly 37 seconds in. And the album is Herbie Hancock VSOP, name of the track is Toys As for the ripping, since my turntable is up in my living room and my computer is downstairs what I have been doing is to rip it directly into my Sony PCM D50 field recorder. It has a good preamp and level control and a limiter, plus a divide button to separate tracks. I then have a bunch of wav files which I can do whatever with. If the song sounds like it needs something more I might do something to it in Ableton Live..... but generally I won't want to mess around with it too much, just tag it in iTunes Brendan, I have never used Audacity, what do you find difficult about it? DC - You mean this one: Bummer, that's pretty sweet lookin

  8. Cody B says Wow..that sample is so short they shouldn't have to pay for it..Nice one. They made that drum sound? That is really cool.

  9. Dzendvokh says You're right Cody, it's not a pure sample , they made that drum sound, and they also altered the pitch just a bit.

  10. Cody B says I'm looking for ways to not work on what i should be working on..your post sent me scurrying to the archives and I came up with an idea to do a sample breakdown of the Black Sheep..So my research leads me to this Joe Farrell Lp on CTI called Upon this Rock..Now I really want it..Sorry about this list..oh hell i won't put the whole list. Just know that a ton of folks are using it.This is the shortened horizontal list. Joe Farrell Upon this Rock: (CTI 1974) * "Upon this Rock" (Drums) A Tribe Called Quest, Artifacts,Black Sheep,Common,Kanye West ,Pete Rock & CL Smooth,Redman & Method Man A new one for me to find..and on the real Jazz tip Joe Farrell has played w/everybody from the 60's on. So much to learn. What I will do with it I'm not sure.

  13. Bartleby says Sampling nuts. I beg you pardon, rather sampling peas, you mean. The cue sampled by The Beatniks is so brief that I won't if the electric piano needed plugging at all. Who would have thought? Another brilliant Herbie Hancock's vintage. Thanks Dzen'
