Morning Coffee 8 - Minilogue

Posted about 4 years ago
Minilogue has been my techno of choice in the past week or so.From their Wiki: Minilogue are a Swedish Progressive House/Tech-House/Minimal Techno music project of Sebastian Mullaert and Marcus Henriksson. The name is a portmanteau of minimal (the musical style) and dialogue, which refers to music as a form of communication.Listen for the transitions in these extended pieces, they sneak up on you, suddenly you realize that your a little disoriented, and just at that point you're swept along again. Over twelve minutes of music you never get the sense that its repetition just for the sake of extension, rather its as if they need all that time to develop the fullness that is their brand of minimalism. This next one I posted in the comments section of "Ms.Rosalita's":http://mog.com/MsRosalita/blog_post/122385 Trentemoller postbut I thought it should come out on its own because its really not a remix at all.
You can find videos on their "site":http://www.minilogue.com/ and also on "Carolyn's":http://mog.com/Carolyn_O%27Brien/blog_post/121316 post. But here's a couple just in case. check out Leopard, not for the video but for the song.

  5. soulrocket says minimal techno, as micki well said berlin was the place for this stuff. probably still is. loved some of the mini-house releases years ago. the tiger video is my fave here. do you guys still add an ocean of water into the coffee? :-P

  6. bloodtea says I find minimalist music very enjoyable - got this huge fixation on Philip Glass' and Steve Reich's work -, and despite of not being very fond of the techno/house stuff, there’s something about these songs you posted that captivates me... The begging of last video’s song reminded me of this (yup, here goes my _minimal marimba repetitive song_ contribution): ~lLNSbiZNjB4.mp3~ bq.

  7. Dzendvokh says brand X - same to you Micki - funny thing is, I'm not a club guy, I mean I wouldn't mind going to Berlin and partying but that's not really where my enjoyment of this music comes from. Mike - Glad I could extend you Halloween Flux - Check your Mogmail Danny - An ocean of Water, what you talking about? I live and die by Strong Ass Coffee. Andrea - Really nice song you posted. I think we need more official posts like that on the "original" minimalist. Speaking of Reich I have the Katsi triology coming through the pipe which I am looking forward to revisiting.

  8. bloodtea says do you mean the *_Qatsi_* trilogy? ain't Mr. Glass behind that? well, about that minimalism... I'm preparing some stuff as we speak. (when I get home I'll post it or something like that)

  13. Carolyn O'Brien says I have got to get that Minilogue album. After watching the videos they've composed for, I'm in. Yeah, 'qatsi' is Glass, not Reich. But I have something better to suggest. Bloodtea's post made me thing of Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians. It is very similar to the sextet bloodtea posted, with constant rhythmic phasing, etc. but what I like even more about it is that there are so many types of instruments and timbres to get lost in. They even had a bass clarinet and soprano voice. Let me tell you, it sounds both futuristic and primordial. Reich is in my opinion, by far the most interesting and sophistocated minimalist. His harmonic languages are just beautiful, and much of the rhythms he's studied and employed are influenced by African music. I wish I could post Music for 18, but it's 56 minutes long and I think the file is just too big at 77MB. thanks to you both for putting me in mind of this. (p.s. Dz did soulrocket just get all up in your grill about caffeine??? man, are you gonna take that!?)

  14. soulrocket says did soulrocket just get all up in your grill about caffeine??? man, are you gonna take that!? carolyn, don’t bite your tongue or you could die poisoned.

  15. Carolyn O'Brien says you mean I'll full of equal parts non-ocean-diluted caffeine, piss and vinegar? mmmmmm . . . . I'll keep my tongue loose, but unbitten. thanks for the warning, though . . .

  16. soulrocket says hah, no. i meant do not sow discord :-P i was just kidding.
    Permalink posted 11/14/2007
  17. Carolyn O'Brien says oh I was just teasing too. besides, by the time we get your special European coffee I imagine there's lots of ocean water diluting it. speaking of . . . coffee please!?

  18. Dzendvokh says Well its good to see our little dispute has been resolved. Danny you don't even drink coffee what the hell you talkin bout anyways....Chamomille tea anyone? was that video a non-sequitur or am I missing something, I liked it though Carolyn, that song sounds intriguing. Would like to hear it, 56 minutes, that is a marathon listening session. Gotta be in the zone for that one. Minilogue does not have one album they have a ton of 12" EP's. I'll try to put up the collection I have at my "multiply":http://dzendvokh.multiply.com/ you gotta have an account though to get it. Incidentally, if you do get one, its a good way to pass on something like that Reich song. Although I may have to track it down for myself anyways. I watched some program recently on music and they broke down one of Glass's Akhnaten movements showing how it related to African rhythms. It was pretty brief but very interesting. Would certainly like to know more.

  19. Cody B says I'm just now learning to appreciate this type of music in the home environment, although I keep thinking what it would be like in the club. The ebb and flow of Inca is cool along with some of the dubby effects..Are you big on headphones Dz or are you usually listening at regular volumes on speakers? I remember buying Manuel Göttsching back in the day. where does E2-E4 fit in the development of "Progressive House/Tech-House/Minimal Techno", if at all?

  20. soulrocket says good point, carolyn. you got me there, nick. my attempt to disguise that clip as minimal techno was totaly unjustified, i must give you that.

  21. madrid spacestation spain says very nice! i dug inca a couple of times in a row. i like the segment at around 6mins. and the transistion to the next part at 7mins is quite exciting. those double-tapped scratched-out snares are feet tapping awesome

  22. bloodtea says *nick*, I only questioned that cuz I have the 3 qatsis ihih - if not you could've said madonna was a minimalist composer, i'd buy that for good. *daniel*, that was so sweet... thanks (and if I were you, the next time someone tries to bug you because of nick you better hit 'em with a 5kg bag of coffee beans - then after it you can gently send me the bag.. with the coffee beans in it - kidding) *carolyn*, hmmmm... when it comes to sophistication you're ringing erik satie's bell - at least, this is my opinion -, but i do admit liking steve reich more than satie - guess not even if that poor man came back to life he wouldn't have the geniality to compose _different trains_, _three tales_ and _music for 18 musicians_.

  26. Dzendvokh says Danny, you know I'm a master at droppin non-sequiturs into posts.....don't bother me none. Honestly Cody, I just really started getting into this music in the last couple of years, so my knowledge of it's development is pretty scant. I have slowly been filling in the gaps but generally I pretty much follow the newer stuff out there, and there is way too much of it, a lot of fluff. Nowadays with the ubiquitous nature of small bedroom "project" studios (like mine I might add) it is so easy for anyone to drop some 4/4 beats with some effects and call it minimal. What I admire, and this is coming from a non club going person (and I realize, especially for music like Minilogue, that the full effect and intent is best experienced in a club setting) is the way the most effective producers can create the feeling of an ever changing organic flow, with subtle hints of the most delicate motifs appearing and disappearing, all the while pulsing rhythmically forward. I should post some Ricardo Villalobos because he is an absolute master at that. As for listening I do both. At home it's mostly headphones because I do most listening at night and I have two little ones and this music is just not suitable for them. My three year old just flat out does not like it, and I can totally understand. But listening with headphones allows you to pick up on more of the subtlety that they are putting into the songs. And you really get the sense that there is more to the music than just a surface listening would allow. At work we set up some big ole 80's speakers with an early 80's reciever that has stood the test of time in our dusty environment and I get to play it as loud as I want so I do get to move to it. Glad you liked it Madrid Bugs, damn Bugs......... Yeah no clubs for me on Whidbey, but this.....just might do it for me..... Techno + + Autobahn

  27. Carolyn O'Brien says Dz: thanks for the tip on multiply. 'I am' told me about it last week. Then I got sick and had no patience. I'll join up as soon as I'm back on my feet and able to actually think/learn new things. soulrocket: that bug was quite something. as for bloodtea's suggestion with the coffee beans that you are apparently not using for you own consumption, perhaps you could invest in a pea shooter or a larger bored drinking straw, then shoot them at the backs of girls heads for a full on retro elementary school flirt session. bloodtea: I love E. Satie. Funny, I would never think of him and Reich together until just now. And you are right, he had a much darker, ennui-filled sense of humor than Reich. Reich's just a nice guy, actually. Satie seems a tad bitter to say the least. There's nice little book about him if you are interested. Lots of his drawings too. I love composers who can doodle. incidentally, I still need coffee. . . damnit.

  28. mickimicki says ... re: wayyyy up in the post... you'd be surprised... I used to listen to minimal techno (some very good stuff came out of Cologne, too) when riding my bicycle, before moving to Berlin... the clubbing angle came only when I got here. And clubbing here in the early-mid 90's wasn't "clubbing" as we know it... There were lots of un-licenced dark hidden caves, some even with a rather cozy atmosphere... very un-judging crowd, and it used to be CHEAP! Those were the days... (feeling old and housewifey for a second ;)

  29. soulrocket says hah micki. i know what you are talking about. the 90s felt really good for clubbing. i was more into deep house than minimal techno tho.. still some minimal tunes sounded realy good. happy times.

  30. Cody B says Thanks for that Nick..you sure pick some good ones for just starting out and the way you explain the subtle shifting is a good way of describing what I get out of music like this..ride the constant groove and listen to (watch) the threads dissolving, mutating, and reappearing..cool stuff...E2-E4 is kinda like that, but more primitive (1992) I'll M it and when you have an hour...yup it is long..check it out

  31. Bartleby says Is coffee still served after 11:00pm? Too bad if it isn't because it may minimalist but gives maximum sensations for my occipital lobe. Thanks Dzen (sorry, I'm too absent-minded and knackered to say anything intelligent or constructive to your mix)

  32. indiepixie says wow- i am not only impressed by your ecclectic taste but also for the fact you so non-chalantly use the word "portmanteau" to describe the name. cool bravo!

  33. Dzendvokh says Micki - Unlicensed dark hidden caves sounds..... well, Fun! Cody - I'll check out E2-E4 when you get to it, thanks. Michael - just nice to know you stopped by. indiepixie - well I can't take credit for "portmanteau", that was, as I said from their Wiki entry, but I certainly will take credit for my eclectic taste. Thanks!
