WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

The Rotting Log

I forgot to mention in the last post that you all have "dmitra's":http://mog.com/dimitra posts to thank for starting me down the memory wormhole of musical association, a discussion of which you can find over at "I Am's":http://mog.com/I_am/blog_post/121174I saw Huun Huur Tu in Seattle on their '98 tour. Check em out "here":http://www.huunhuurtu.com/ These guys were first recorded by Ted Levine, an American Ethnomusicologist who first heard their music on a tape provided by physicist Richard Feynman. Here's an interesting description of Tuvan music by Ted Levine quoted from "here":http://www.huunhuurtu.com/history.html"Tuvans not only transform the sounds of the natural world into music through imitation; they also make sonic "maps" of physical landscapes which may be expressed in texted songs, throat-singing, whistling, or other types of vocal production. For the Tuvans, one of the purposes of music seems to be to offer detailed and concrete descriptions of topography. In short, Tuvan music is not abstract, like most Western music, but radically representational, the product of a cult of imitation that ties it to an animistic understanding of the world..... "Here's a description of Throat Singing from wiki: "Overtone singing, also known as throat singing, overtone chanting, or harmonic singing, is a type of singing in which the singer manipulates the harmonic resonances (or formants) created as air travels from the lungs, past the vocal folds, and out the lips to produce a melody. Throatsinging is both a generic and a specific term. Generally, it is applied to any singing style which entails the application of a harsh voice or some other constriction. Specifically, it refers to a type of Central Asian overtone singing."If this song isn't blues then I don't know what is.The Rotting Log"If the tree hadn't rotted, one could have used it for a cattle fence or a yurt pole, and if my mother hadn't died, I'd see life as if I had two eyes."The next song is a whimsical piece that goes "I left Eerbek-Aksy, but I didn't leave it empty, because my girlfriend is there."
I just had to put the photo with Stevie in it. Huun Huur tu are the guys around Stevie to the right.

  3. bloodtea says Now here’s a thing I could spend a day listening to... Songs like this one nail this huge thing on the back of my head - a warmth pierces deep down my skin and it spreads down my spine, my mind’s all loosened, and my heartbeat melts in its beat. Thanks Nick – made my morning.
