Freddie Hubbard - Povo

Posted over 2 years ago
At some point in my teens, can't remember exactly when, I started searching out some of the original recordings for the samples cropping up in my favorite hip hop albums, like tribe and de la soul, it was not so much a conscious "I'm going to track this down" kind of thing, more like a general recognition of influence. There were starting points in my fathers record collection. Freddie Hubbard's Red Clay stands out in memory. And also Sky Dive, which I picked up at Everybody's records in Cincy. This track has always been one of my favorites, it takes me back to that time of my life.

  1. brendanhalpin says Twinge of nostalgia at your mention of Everybody's Records. Bought my first Ramones tickets there. It was definitely my favorite record store in Cincinnati, though I often found good stuff at Ozarka sandwiched between the copies of Jethro Tull's Heavy Horses. Is Everybody's still even there? Or has it gone the way of my other favorite record stores, 3rd Street Jazz and Rock in Philadelphia?

  2. Dzendvokh says Still there. I have not lived in Cincy for a while but last time I visited it looked like it was doing quite well. Still lots of vinyl and a nice selection. Yeah, I spent a lot of time there when I was young.

  3. Cody B says Boss track Dz, and Red Clay is an all time fave..Decent cover done by acid jazzers the Solsonics in the 90's, but I remeber this moment on the original: A friend of mine and I drove from Chicago to NYC non stop once and as I was crossing the GW bridge into the city Red Clay came on the radio. The was bumper to bumper traffic, but it was spring in NYC (still bitter cold in Chicago),. The brilliant sun warming our faces + Red Clay made us feel like it was gonna be a good visit, and for once in my life I didn't give a rats ass about the traffic. So where's the best 5 way?
