MOG MOG

MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Title is a song lyric and does nor reflect my feelings on joining mog. :-P

I have quite an intense fondness for Snow Patrol's "Set The Fire To The Third Bar," and a lot of what contributes to the musical fondness is its haunting quality brought about by the accompanying voice, Martha Wainwright. I had never heard of her before, but her contribution makes the song more acutely powerful, both because she is the other half of the two people desperately missing each other, and because there's something about her voice that is delicate and haunting.

So, continuing to love that song, I checked out pinkfish's page, and she had listed a Martha Wainwright song as something people should listen to. That was a little bit of a shock. I hadn't really considered her independently of Snow Patrol and the song and how I felt about it.

I listened to the songs on marthawainwright.com, and I must say that I am impressed, and still can't place that "something" in her voice. It is unique, it sounds like a fusion of elements. Have been enjoying "Far Away," "Factory" (which is just so interesting), and "These Flowers."

A very welcome and unexpected discovery, and of course, I'd appreciate further direction. And thanks to pinkfish for just being awesome.

Soon I won't be "miles from where you are" ...

I stumbled across Martha Wainwright because I'm a fan of her brother. I don't have a lot of her music, but I like Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole and Who Was I Kidding in addition to the songs you mentioned. I just downloaded Set the Fire to the Third Bar. Great song! Thanks for the tip.

geez, i'm blushing, really, stop. when was the last time i was referred to as awesome? i'm so glad you checked Martha out. i saw her open for her brother, gosh, like maybe five years ago or something and i got chills from hearing her voice. her self titled album is worth every cent so if you haven't bought it, go now and get it! "when the day is short", "ball and chain", "far away", "G.P.T.", "factory" and "bloody mother fucking asshole" (which incidentally, is about her father Loudon Wainwright III) are my faves off of that album. can't wait to hear what you think of the whole thing, enjoy!

Well then, you should be called awesome more often!

Thanks for the tip. I will most certainly check that album out soon. Right now, I can't acquire new music, but in a few more weeks I'll be able to, to my great joy, and I'll let you know what I think.
