Big Iron World

You can't get much further removed from Old Time String music than living at the bottom of the South Island of New Zealand. I grabbed up O.C.M.S based solely on my opinion that with a name like that and two banjos on the album case, they would be as good an introduction to bluegrass as any. Luckily for me, sometimes you can judge an album by its cover.OCMS deflowered me! So I was a fair bit flustered when I got my mawleys on Big Iron World. I guess nothing really compares to your first time? A good album to be sure, but if you like Eutaw and Greetings from Wawa just that little bit more than O.C.M.S like I did, then you are going to be a little bit disapointed with this release. The band seems to be moving towards a more generic country feel rather than the lo-fi old time sound. The notible exceptions on the album are Down Home Girl, Minglewood Blues and my pick of the album God's Got It. Another song worth more than a mention is Fall To My Knees from the Down Home Girl EP.If you haven't heard Old Crow Medicine Show before, I suggest you grab O.C.M.S first even though it breaks my heart to say so.

  1. Putty says i'm listening to Minglewood Blues right now and boy is it twangy. I can see how a lo fi sound from them would be more enjoyable.
