Hey y'all, thanks to everyone who came to the shows on our US tour! In every city we received so much kindness and moral support and it really means the world to us. I don't normally think of myself as boastful, but all of these shows made me feel a pride in our audience. If you look at them they seem so different from each other, but they're all amazing listeners and so open minded. (My pride was only disrupted two times that I can think of on this tour, one listener in Athens GA who shouted racial insults at Busdriver, and one listener in Charlottesville VA who shouted our band name so continuously the entire night that I don't think he or anyone around him heard much of the show.)Now we're at home (and for us home=vacation!) for another week or so before we go to Australia and then Europe.Since getting back I found something on itunes I want to share. I have no encyclopedic knowledge of Indian music and have no basis to judge, but I love this album:Dr. L. Subramaniam Three Ragas for Solo ViolinIt's over an hour long but it's only $3.99 - once in a while you can find a deal like this on itunes that seems to have slipped through. Like some 70s Miles Davis songs that last over 20 minutes but are still 99 cents. Anyway it's just violin with tamboura drone, very stark, incredibly beautiful. But I'm still looking for something that I'm not even sure exists, an Indian solo violin record that doesn't even have a drone, but is just solo. Anybody ever heard such a thing?Greg

  1. nicolo says oh. darn. I couldn't make it to the show in Athens (18+) but if I were there I would have put that dude in his place! Don't let it affect your view of Georgia though. You've still got one of your biggest fans ever here!

  3. Spencer Owen says It seems uncommon to find any sort of Indian classical music without an accompanying tambura... at least in my experience. You're still East Bay, right? You should go to Shrimati's on University in Berkeley! If they don't have it... it probably doesn't exist! (Well, maybe it does, but... they have a ton of Indian music... in fact that is all they have...)

  4. max says yep, I second Mr. Spencer Owen, Shrimati's would probably answer your question, indefinetely. All they have is Indian music and a damn lot of it I might add. I remember finding some decent stuff in there a year or so back, haven't been there in a while though, perhaps I'll run into you! p.s. loved the show at The Great American, great times, and who doesn't love Busdriver, I've had "The Troglodyte Wins" sample stuck in my head all week!

  5. rock or death says Sorry I can't help you with the Indian solo violin, but I wanted to let you know that I am completely hooked on Friend Opportunity. Can't wait to see your next Bay Area show! Any idea around when that might be?

  7. Jess Horrible says Mmmmmmmmmmm, I love violin. To me it sounds just like the human voice, but with so much more consistency and fine control. And violin raga... amazing. I will definitely look for this. I will also ask my friend whose dad is a professional Middle Eastern violinist, I bet he can find a piece or two with no drone. Welcome back eh! I wonder if that guy in Charlottesville thought that he was contributing to the show in some way.

  8. MrFrost says great find, i dont like downloading from itunes, because then i have to strip all that Icky DRM off. But in cases like you mentioned, the deals are too good to pass up.

  10. dj ivi says i love a tamboura drone. i would be of no help trying to find an album without it. i'd watch ladyC for her recommendations. she really knows her suff, and it sounds like she's going to the source! enjoy your vacation. the first thing i do when i get home from tour is ead straight to the mission for a BURRITO! you can NOT find a mission burrito anywhere else is america. it's one of the special comforts of home....

  13. Leff Turner says Y'all turned DC out! Look for an ECM record by Shankar (Ravi Shankar's nephew I think) called "Who's To Know." He's actually playing a sympathetic violin. It's pretty small and has two necks, one for the sympathetic strings. It's an amazing album but I've only ever seen it on vinyl. Evidently it's been reissued on CD too: http://www.amazon.com/Whos-Know-Shankar/dp/B0000261KS Enjoy and thanks for everything!
