In The Meantime: Spacehog love

Posted almost 6 years ago
Borrowed from PuffMagic's earlier post showing love for the boys of Spacehog, I thought I'd share this story (with details painted in from my original post on Puff's blog).I got to hang out with Spacehog (minus Royston) when they performed at an awful radio festival here in the mountains of Virginia in 2001. The Hogyssey was fresh and there was a cobbled together lineup dubbed "Livestock 2001" and held in the now demolished Victory Stadium. Spacehog came on after a full day of country and bluegrass bands and as soon as they started the crowd (clearly nonplussed and confused by the English accents) started bolting. About 40 stuck around including a very excited bunch of my friends and I. I nabbed the setlist and was informed by a roadie that they’d be out to sign autographs in a minute. While waiting with only 12 people I realized the setlist was on hotel stationary: the Holiday Inn Airport here in Roanoke. I got them to sign it and they snickered that they “gave the game away” by using the stationary. Walking back to the car we realized that Johnny had written “By the way we’re in 172” on the setlist. My wife and a close friend ate some grub nearby and then proceeded to the hotel where we played pool and drank with the band until 4am. Some of the coolest guys. Royston was within a few months of his wedding to Liv Tyler, so Anthony was very chatty about the wedding.-There's a photo somewhere of us with them, but i can't find it right now (I have a bad printout, I'll get my buddy to resend and I'll post sometime soon).- FOUND IT!Spacehog post BONUS feature: Have you heard Evan Dando’s “Waking Up” from his solo Baby I’m Bored LP? You should give it a listen—it’s done with Royston and they essentially re-work “I Want to Live” on acoustic with new lyrics.-Dean

  2. watchbatteries says Other radio concerts held in Virginia, but the underrated, underrepresented Hampton Roads/Seven Cities/ Norfolk/VA Beach area: 106.1 (yeah, I got pissed when they went from 96X's other station to top 40) Winter Meltdown "mall Music"-Malcolm Veneable FM99 Lunatic Lau. I believe they changed this for 2001, and reverted back the next year. 104.5 Summer Bash. Newest and most boring, 96X Concert Series-The best one. No cool name this year.
