Shriekback and Disco Not Disco

Posted about 2 years ago
When I took a break from Gang of Four in 1981 I formed a band with Barry Andrews of XTC and a new friend of ours, Carl Marsh. We called it Shriekback. Wikipedia has the dirt on Shriekback here. Anyway, our pals over at !K7 Label Group have sent me a new compilation entitled Disco Not Disco upon which I find a Shriekback cut called My Spine Is The Bassline which just happens to be one of my favorite Shriekback tracks. Also on the comp are G4 friends, Delta 5, Konk, Isotope and Bill Laswell. And a true post-punk punk, James White. There's an interview with James White on YouTube. The album will be out in January.

  1. SamTheButcher says Is this the place where I tell you I lost my virginity to Oil & Gold? :) I still consider it one of the more sensual albums of all time, seriously. A great record, and will always have a place in my record collection. I'm not familiar with this track, will this comp be released in the states?

  2. contrabandwidth says Sounds like a great comp and good compendium to sets like ??No Thanks?? or the previous incarnation Rhino Records DIY releases. I'm always interested in stuff Laswell's been involved in too.

  4. Alan Partlow says Wow, I had no idea you were in Shriekback. I still have my vinyl copy of Oil & Gold. Nemesis was a huge club hit when I lived in Tampa. I guess I never paid too much attention to the liner notes. I'll have to check out that compilation since I've never heard My Spine. Great bass line.

  9. skjs says My Spine is one of my favourites. Definitely the crowd pleaser when you played here in Bournemouth around the Jamscience era. I think I've still got a stolen set list somewhere...

  11. skjs says First time was in a nightclub called Upstairs at Eric's (tiny venue on the top floor of a multi-storey car park) and then the Bournemouth International Centre some time later, supported by A Popular History Of Signs. Great time on both occasions.
