5 Min Exposure

Posted almost 5 years ago
I have now updated the Quote:Vital Signs:Unquote section of the Mog page, to include a besides music section. Listed first is my all too guilty pleasure: Halo. This game was a passion of mine since it first came out; granted, it was a passion to hate, but still a passion. I hated Halo, I hated what Halo did for the Xbox (I played gamecube, still do), I hated what Halo did to Nintendo, but most importantly I hated that Halo was popular. My hatred for Halo seemed to subside over the years as I did other things, and eventually I got to a point where I tolerated the game and its influence on popular culture. And then one day... for some odd reason... I decided to download the game and its keygen. I started playing the game on easy (to get the story line... i swear) and found that there was actually a reason it was popular!I became obsessed, with the game, with the story, with the culture of people that played it, but most importantly for this post: with it's music. The Halo music (written by the wonderfully adaptive Martin O'Donnell and Micheal Salvatori) raises the gameplay up to a new level beyond the regular shoot-em-up. It brings Halo into a fully interactive action movie. The music gives the player the feeling that they can take anything thrown at them in a typical movie fashion (Action heroes never die when the rock music is playing). This brings me to why I chose 'Rock Anthem for Saving the World' to represent the entire soundtrack. Bungie has said several times that what makes Halo a good game is that they took the initial 5 minutes of action and just kept repeating it throughout the game. That 5 minutes is one of the best 5 minutes in gaming, and Rock Anthem for Saving the World is one of the few songs that truly captures that 5 minutes in a musical sense (despite being a single measly minute). The Drums sound off as a precursor to the action you're about to face. Then when the guitar kicks in, it reminds you that you're Earth's last hope: So you will win. The tribal vocals help remind you of the nature of the Covenant, your enemy. And when the guitar solo ends to the bang of a gong, it only serves to make the feeling of victory audible.
