All due respect to Huey Lewis and the News, but I wanted to remark on the power of Mog. I meant to post this a while ago, but I got a Mog Mail from DJ Max Power a while back. He saw that I was into Calexico, and sent me a friendly message recommending Girls in Hawaii. So with Rhapsody at my finger tips, it was really easy to check these guys out (yes, guys). I've been listening to them for a few weeks now, and their album has grown on me a bit. Its not a masterpiece, but its a really good record to listen to while cooking or relaxing on the couch. Check them out, "Casper" and "Time to Forgive the Winter" are good favorites, and thanks DJ Max Power!
Calexico is playing tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6pm at Amoeba in SF (on Haight) - presumedly a part of their new album release which comes out tomorrow. I've never seen them live, so I'm looking forward to it...

Despite my enthusiasm, I caught a nasty cold and didn't make the show. Still hoping to catch them live some time - in the meantime, I'll settle for the video of their appearance on Morning Becomes Eclectic - http://www.kcrw.com/smil/mb060413Calexico.ram.
On a side note, I've been listening a lot to "In the Reins", their collab with Iron and Wine (more so than Garden Ruin). I particularly love the operatic vocals on "He Lays in the Reins".
I saw DJ AM and Travis Barker play last night at Mezzanine, and while it was a good time, I'm not sold on the live DJ "concert". I had a similar experience with Röyksopp a couple months ago (also at Mezz) - its just that the novelty wears off after about 30 minutes. I appreciate a good DJ, but playing at a concert venue rather than a club just wasn't the right vibe.

agree. unless you're going for some kind of great show outside of the music. like if they did a cirque du soleil kinda thing. good shows to surround a lame performer can sometimes save a show.
I agree about seeing DJ at a venue like that - especially if they're the type that uses a bunch of laptops and computer gear. My favorite joke is that you can't tell if they're playing music or just checking their email.
i have to say i disagree. royskopp's new album sucks, that's probably why you didn't like their show. but otherwise? i don't know, i'm not sure that great music really needs to be combined with a stage show. you're supposed to dance, imho.
amon tobin rocked my world at mezzanine.

I agree - not a masterpiece, but pretty good for a bunch of dudes from Belgium. Also, in terms of simple, unadulterated pop, I like the track "Short Song For A Short Mind."
In semi-related news, have I given you my spiel about Mountain Con yet? Sancho Panza is my favorite album this week. FYI, I pretty much have a new favorite album every week, but what do you expect from a DJ, right?
Anyway, rock on.
