I know this album came out awhile ago, but it still feels nice to listen to it. I was a late bloomer on the Natalie Merchant solo career train. Initially I thought she was trite and boring, but life has a way of bringing out the pain in us... I heard a track off Ophelia by chance and I was hooked from that day on. Motherland is an awesome follow up, with intense passionate lyrics and a hopeful look at what it means to take the journey to self awareness...

  1. fairportfan says Natalie Merchant! Takes me back to the days when 1000 Maniacs was based in the Atlanta area (i was told; i never caught any of their shows) and they and REM were unsigned bands working the college and club circuit...

  2. SIRYOKOHOMO says I always felt that song of her's, "Thank You" was pretty freakin well done- not "put a fork in it," but rather humble and beautiful. I was slightly disapointed to hear she did that song to suffice a single for the album- whatever, its still stellar and nothing to be ashamed of.
