MOG MOG

MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

I haven't got my data demon on in far too long, so here's the plan: I will attempt, over the next two weeks, to aggregate MOG's favorite albums that have been released the first half of 2007, with your contributions.

Here's how it works: Add a comment with your favorite albums, up to 10, in order. I know this will be hard, but I know you guys can do it. I will then assign a point value relative to their position on your list; the #1 album would receive 10 points, #2 would get 9, and so on. On July 16, I will close the polls, tabulate everything, and post the top 100 (or however many I get, if less), albums of the year so far.

Submissions must: Be at least 45 minutes in length (no EP's). Have an official release date between January 1, 2007 and June 30, 2007. (This one's costing me. This drops Interpol, UNKLE, and Stars from my list, for sure. Not that I've heard those albums, of course. ;) ) Covers albums are acceptable, but not compilations, unless the compiled works were previously unavailable at your home country. Any other hurdles, we'll hop over as we encounter them.

And, since I have the sudden urge to say what should remain unsaid, don't denigrate others' choices. We all experience music through different ears, so I would be stunned to find anyone who comes up with the same list. It's your list, like what you like. No peer pressure, please.

So, without further ado, here's my Top 10 for this year so far (edited to drop Editors, grumble grumble) (oh, the irony):

01. Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare 02. The National - Boxer 03. The Mary Onettes 04. Midnight Movies - Lion The Girl 05. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Baby 81 06. Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero 07. Cinematics - A Strange Education 08. Boy In Static - Violet 09. Art Brut - It's A Bit Complicated 10. Autokat - Late Night Shopping

Let the debate begin!

BTW, over the next two weeks, excepting the 4th and Sundays, I will post reminders, and will attempt to explain my choices. I know, I'm really sticking my neck out, or really trying to get mileage from this.

Well here it goes. This is hard. Especially since when I do year end best of lists, it usually includes music from all years. Meaning that if I discover a band in 2007 but the record came out in 2003 it would be allowed to be in the 2007 best of list. Anyways, here is my list so far.

2007 .5 best of list

The Locks...meaning these will hold a top 10 spot without a doubt this year. 1. Feist - The Reminder 2. Young Galaxy - Young Galaxy 3. Studio - Yearbook 1 4. The Aliens - Astronomy for Dogs

Everything below is tentative for 2007 and has a good chance of being bumped with some heavy hitters coming out later this year....The Go! Team, Interpol, Broken Social Scene, Stars, Spoon...I am sure at least 3 of those 5 bands are almost locks for making the final list at the end of the year.

5. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Baby 81 6. The Twiglight Sad - Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters 7. The National - Boxer 8. Rob Crow - Living Well 9. Wilco - Sky Blue Sky 10. Explosions in the Sky - All of a Sudden...

Well, according to my sources, Editors has a July 17th street date for the States, and Interpol has a July 10th street date for the States. They're certainly not in any stores in my town! Just depends on which side of the pond you're on and how much of a rule-stickler you want to be, I guess.

My order could change daily, depending on my mood, since I listen to such different kinds of music:

1. Clutch - From Beale St. to Oblivion 2. Queens of the Stone Age - Era Vulgaris 3. Neurosis - Given to the Rising 4. Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero 5. Menomena - Friend or Foe 6. Carina Round - Slow Motion Addict 7. Bloc Party - Weekend in the City 8. Chimaira - Resurrection 9. Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb 10. Kings of Leon - Because of the Times

My alternates, which could also supplant any on the above list due to my mood:

Maroon 5 - It Won't Be soon Before Long Pelican - City of Echoes Poison the Well - Versions Frames - Cost Modest Mouse - We Were Dead. . .

Also, there's lots I haven't heard yet, as I'm sure is the case with most of you (these lists are too hard!).

For some reason I feel like 2007 hasn't been a good year for music but once I started making this list I realized I already have about 25 contenders for it. Then again, once you get past the first three, the quality falls off sharply from truly great to only occasionally brilliant.

1. The bird & the bee, the bird & the bee 2. Amon Tobin, The Foley Room 3. Arctic Monkeys, Favourite Worst Nightmare 4. LCD Soundsystem, Sound of Silver 5. Polyphonic Spree, The Fragile Army 6. Charlotte Gainsbourg, 5:55 7. Feist, The Reminder 8. White Stripes, Icky Thump 9. Kings of Leon, Because of the Times 10. Peel, Peel

Most of these need no explanation, but I should mention that Peel is a new band from Austin who are totally awesome and, so far, completely overlooked. Think New Pornographers meet Pavement meet Big Star. I couldn't justify putting them higher on the list because I haven't listened to them enough, but they're well worth checking out. From looking at my iTunes library, it seems that I have only bought 7 CD's this year with a 2007 release date. Wait, it seems that a couple are misfiled under 2006, so I think I have 9. I guess they all get a place.

1) Modest Mouse, We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank 2) The Polyphonic Spree, The Fragile Army 3) The White Stripes, Icky Thump 4) Rush, Snakes and Arrows 5) Fishbone, Still Stuck in Your Throat 6) The National, Boxer 7) The Shins, Wincing the Night Away 8) Deerhoof, Friend Opportunity

I haven't listened to the ninth yet but I did buy it

9) Page McConnell, Page McConnell

I guess I have spent too much time catching up on the older releases from the Modest Mouse catalog and listening to the many, great 2006 releases this year.
