BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Warning! Dangerously gorgeous bass player ahead!

If you didn't already know, The Raveonettes are a Danish rock band that take a love of 50's-style rock 'n' roll, and filter it through a wall of noise similar to the Jesus and Mary Chain. Their first EP, Whip It On, and first album, Chain Gang of Love, were unique for their strict adherence to one key, in which all the songs were written.

Their EP, Whip It On, features all eight songs written in B-flat minor, giving the songs a film-noir feel. Witness the song "Beat City", which makes a simple bike ride seem dangerous:

To contrast, the album Chain Gang of Love featured all of its songs in the key of B-flat major, which brightens the songs considerably, even through the noise. Dig, if you will their single "That Great Love Sound":

Oh, why can't those crazy kids get along?

Their most recent album, Pretty In Black, uses a much more traditional 50's sound, and cleans up most, but not all, of the noise present on previous albums. Behold their video for single "Love In A Trashcan":

Humbly submitted for your approval.

You're right. This is a great band. Last friday I saw Raveonettes drummer Jacob Høyer playing in the danish band Rhonda Harris. Really great band.

Some years ago......right before the Raveonettes breakthrough I worked as a roadie. Sune Wagner played in the band I toured with and I remember the times tuning his fender jaguar before the shows.....and I remember how he always had to re-tune before playing. He never got mad. Real calm and friendly about me being one of the worst roadies on the planet. He used to front a band called Psyched Up Janis which I never thought much of.....but during those shows......hanging out right behind Sune's amp I learned what an amazing guitar player he is. Amazingly musical and amazingly skilled.

A few hours ago I wrote a post about Rhonda Harris. Check out the Townes Van Zandt cover album "Tell The World We Tried" if you want to know what Raveonettes-drummer is up to these days.

And on a slightly different, girly note, the singer (based on Love In A Trashcan's vid) needs a haircut now. She doesn't. Her hair are perfect. I wish I was attached to a hairdresser, so that my hair would be like that 24/7. Sigh.

Yup, couldn't agree more, Sune Rose Wagner needs a haircut in the worst way.

Why is it Girl + Bass = hotness. It seems to be an equation that almost always works out.

I've learned by years of experience to not question, but just appreciate, hotness equations like this. And heaven help us if the woman has an accent.

Dale, I hadn't kept up with The Raveonettes since "The Great Love Sound," thanks. Cool how we can share videos with each other. I like the last one a lot: can't decide if it's the Russ Meyer-like dance party or all of that pink.

Anna, is that really your bass or a picture from your wish list? Speaking of which, I meant to compliment you on the new one. Reminds me of this:

Sigh...wish list...it's called 30" Scale Princess Purple Daisy Heartbreaker Bass Guitar :) It can't be more girly :)

Thank you very much. Has did it for me. Who is on that pic & did you do it? I love it :D I can't tell what it reads after Jennifer, I must be losing my eye sight...

It's funny how taste changes over time. I recall listening to that last Raveonettes cd at a record store cause I'd heard & read alot of hype over them but was far from impressed by the 50's flashback sound. It seemed to me pretty simple & I didn't understand what the hype was all about.

Now, listening & watching the vids you posted I'm liking them, especially the earlier stuff that sounds like TJAMC but I like 'Trashcan' too. When did the "Pretty In Black' cd come out, like 2003 or 04?

And for the record I like the hair in the eyes look on the female bass player--VERY SEXY! I think it's a tenant of aging when you see someone who's a hipster & think they should get a haircut. That's the effect they are going for, to annoy & irritate older generations, and have a cool looking cut. (For the record, I am OLDer than any of you, I'm sure, at 46).

No, Anna, I didn't. The artist is Patrick Nagel, perhaps best known for his Rio album art (in addition to covering effete bedroom walls throughout the '80s). The "Jennifer" along the bottom of the print is, is in fact, his widow, who oversees the licensing and use of his now rare, retro-contemporary images. Of course those hyphenated descriptives are at odds, but together they aptly nail his sleek-deco aesthetic. Anyway, if the art is suddenly wrested from this thread in the middle of the night, you'll know why.

Has rocks: the digitally crafted Nagel has even more lifelight than the originals.

"Daisy" is lovely...how long have you been playing?

(Apologies for straying completely from the subject matter. Next time I'll head straight to the MOG mail.)

30 Inch scale no prob...it's about the player not the bass...thats what Mike Watts Gibson SG is...I hate anything really above 34 inch scale except F basses, but I'll never get one...starting price around 3-4k at that price it doesn't leave the house...thats arter list...

Augusts, we're dissing the lack of haircut on the MALE singer. The girl is hawtness, there's no denying that. Ray, umm, keep doing what you do. Jeni, not a problem, derailed posts are Anna's specialty.

Ahh, I love the video of "That Great Love Sound." It's included on Chain Gang of Love, a CD I stole from the club I once took part in, Campus Events. hehehe.

I first saw this duo at the Troubadour in LA... they played Buddy Holly's "Everyday" in minor key. It was SO cool, but I haven't been able to find it recorded anywhere. I liked them immediately. :) Thus, a stamp of approval in my book.

Also, I think both of them are totally hot.

Oh, like DUH August, lmao! I totally misread Anna's comment. Sorry Dale, hehe!

Although, now that I'm paying attention to his haircut I think my previous comment still makes sense. I like it cause it's a real geeky hipster style & since everything in that vid seems to be rather calculated out I'm sure his hairstyle is purposely anti-stylish.

Haha, yes, they are my specialty, indeed :)

I know, Has is brilliant... I wiki-ed Patrick Nagel, very, very interesting. I love his aesthetic. Thank you for the heads up. No worries, wrested art is good art as well, or so my sources tell me :)

Nah, I don't play, I just really love this purple bass. I'm afraid I might be deftone and therefore incapable of playing anything other than air-bass. :(

Raveonettes post! Happy happy! I fell in love with them immediately upon hearing them too - it's that sound - infectious. Everything right about 50's rock and 80's noise. Has no one commented on the similarities between Raeonettes and X - as in John Doe and Exene Cervenka?

Dale says:

Hmm, good point, although Exene contributes a lot more to X than Sharin does to the Raveonettes, with her talents as a singer and poetess. Then again, I don't recall Exene being asked to play guitar and bass parts, no matter how simple Sharin's parts are.
