WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Breaking From Your Kiss To Turn Up A Pop Song

Posted over 2 years ago
If I wasn't convinced with Bang Bang Rock 'n' Roll, I'm now completely convinced: Eddie Argos is my new patron saint. I listened to the new album It's A Bit Complicated yesterday, and I found it difficult to suppress a goofy smile as he sang his stories of being in love with pop music. Opening track "Pump Up The Volume" made me laugh out loud, as he talked about "breaking from a kiss, to turn up a pop song". Not that I have ever done that, but let's just say that I don't play music while trying to be intimate, for just that reason.Hope this balances out the last post. :)

  1. gympumpkin says I have heard a few songs off the album (I haven't listened to it all the way through yet) but I love the songs I have heard so far. I saw them do "Direct Hit" live, and it was awesome.

  4. Puffmagic says For some reason I never got into Art Brut, mostly for the same reason I never got into The Streets: that cockney British accent. Sounds great when spoken in films, sounds great when singing in songs, sounds not so great spoken in songs. Or maybe I don't like spoken word music in general, I can't tell. The point is, this track is making me rethink my position on Art Brut. So, thanks a lot you bastard.

  7. SA says Same as Gympumpkin, listened to a couple of the songs, and really liking it, but haven't gotten around to listening to the full album yet (blame Editors eh ;)) Was thinking of going to their concert, but it is on a Sunday, and since I have free train transportation on weekdays, but have to pay on Sundays, that's a bit too expensive for me. Same for Modest Mouse, which is on a Saturday. Come on guys, get here during weekdays, much more fun for students. ;)

  8. Anna says After MOG, I think I won't be able to get intimate without music, lol. Thanks, bro, though I have this album, I haven't given it a spin yet, so this is first listen for me as well.

  11. Dale says That's it, Puff's going on the widget, muwahahahaha! You're next, Henry. No joke, Ash, why aren't they on here yet? Stef, they're playing near you, and bus fare's what stopping you?!? GO NOW! Hang on, am I +encouraging+ you to go to a Sunday concert? Just remember to start with the volume up, sis. Aw geez, now I'm encouraging Anna being intimate. I really need to stop now. Yup Neill, that Eddie Argos has a way with words. Between him and Alex Turner, there's a glut of really good lyricists now, something that's been long missing. Apparently, the Church of Argos' membership is swelling. :D

  12. kristiana says "Argos’ membership is swelling", now now! Art Brut, good. No music during lovemaking, bad! But I guess you have a point. Imagine getting up to flip a record!

  14. Lizziegreeneyes says You mean there is such a thing as intimacy with_OUT_ music ... that's just wrong. My EX had to have the TV on - my joke was & still is, our song was the news theme to CH 6 ACTION NEWS ... Right, I know - why did I date him ??? ... momentary lapse of reason, sanity, self-respect ... gahead - feel free to add ;) Funny sidenote - Jim Gardner is the anchor - looks like he's in his 70s - probably is close to that ... I saw him at a party at the King of Prussia mall that I organized & he was with this really pretty young lady & three little ones in tow - complimented him on his grandchildren - he says, "These aren't my _GRANDCHILDREN_ - *I don't HAVE grandchildren* ..." oops ... +_Jim - it's called Just for Men gel_+ ;P

  15. Dale says Cue The Modern Lovers' "Roadrunner" here. "Oh honey, tonight we'll try Interpol." Somehow, I don't think that'll fly.

  16. blueone51 says This all so post-modern. I got this cd several days ago but, what with the holiday and all, did get around to listening to it. So I listen to the cut posted here first and then double back to the actual physical object that I own. Love the way this works.

  18. 1234chainsaw says I hate to be the party poop (why do I feel that's all too often my role here?), but I've spun the record about five times with pretty close attention. Musically, there never was much going on in Art Brut. Whatever strengths they have are in lyrics and Argos's delivery. On this record, (1) most of the songs are musically more boring than songs on the debut and (2) most lyrics, though still exceptionally funny and perceptive on occasion (you guys have collectively quoted most of the best parts), are overall less clever than on debut. Too often, Argos sounds too earnest. Under (1), the reason is mostly that the guitar riffs sound just tired and dashed. Mostly you can tell what's coming from the opening bars, and in this case the predictability is no fun. "Nag Nag Nag Nag" is the standout track, very few others come close. I'm sure that in concert none of this will be a problem. On record, it most definitely is.

  19. Mike the Knife says Dunno, 'saw. This is mighty clever/catchy. It's enough to get me going for more. If I'm disappointed, feel free to say "Told ya so."
