EMCD At Work - The Mary Onettes

Posted over 2 years ago
*Make Me Last*Ever since I discovered the Radio Dept. I've been madly in love with the output from the Swedish label Labrador Records. I'm utterly convinced that they might have the tightest quality control going. Then again, they are a Swedish label, and as we've discussed before, Sweden doesn't product junk, no matter what genre you prefer. While figuring what to do with my paltry 30 downloads on eMusic this month, I found the homonymous debut album from the Mary Onettes, on the Labrador label. Drawn to it like a moth to a flame, I downloaded it and gave it a good listen. Let's see if I made a good purchase, shall we?*Pleasure Songs*Seductive bass lines - check!Atmospheric keyboards - check!Yearning vocals - check!Heart-tugging lyrics - check!Guitar lines that pierce the heart or make the spirit soar - check! If you're still looking for something to tide you over until the new Interpol or Editors albums come out, look no further! Just sayin'. ;)

  1. 1234chainsaw says Good call, Dale. I've been digging "Void" and "Lost" and "Pleasure Songs" for the past couple of months, but haven't gotten around to getting the album yet. I think it's still import-only, for those of us in the US who prefer a hard copy, but I'll have to double check now!

  2. Dale says According to the info on allmusic.com, it was released on 1 May, but that may have been the Sweden release.

  8. angeldawn says Mmmmm... who do they remind me of? The Companion is a little Human League, little Spandau Ballet. Like 'em, will have to listen to more. Thanks Dale.

  10. angeldawn says Thanks. It's good to have some MOG time. Daughter was home with some viral thing this week. Anything icky lurking around your kids' schools in Wichita?

  11. Dale says Not a thing, thank goodness.

  12. 1234chainsaw says If anything, they sound like The Chameleons and The Sound circa Jeopardy and From the Lions Mouth. Now those are some good influences.

  13. Dale says Good point, I can really hear the Chameleons influence, but that's because I'm less familiar with The Sound.

  14. fistula spume says Labrador is an EMCD unto itself. They turn you on with all sorts of free tidbits and then when your feeling the junk sickness you gotta pay for the next hit. Damn them Swedes. I just can't quit them. Especially Sambassadeur and Suburban Kids With Biblical Names. Need to hear The Mary Onettes. I so want that 4 cd Labrador 100 box set. Someday...

  15. Dale says You and me both, Sam. I need to pick up that Suburban Kids with Biblical Names album too. Oy, they've got their hooks in me.
