WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Mirrored review

Posted over 2 years ago
Despite my best efforts to dissuade her, Kez has posted my review of the new Battles album Mirrored on her webzine, TAXI!"Check it out here.":http://www.taximag.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=141&Itemid=39Since this is my first article of any nature published outside of MOG, I'd like some feedback on it. Please, keep differences of opinion aside when doing so; it's the form of the review that needs help, not so much the content.Maybe this will get the critical juices flowing.

  1. B42 says It sucks, (just joking) but I think the font has to be just a little bit smaller...

  2. B42 says and now that I've actually read the review, (after zooming to max), I want more and like the feel you give to it all. Good, I give it 4 puffdaddies.

  3. Dale says Thanks Bruce, can't help much with the font tho. :)

  4. B42 says This for your wife Dale - The Biker & The Lord A biker was riding along a California beach when suddenly the sky clouded above his head and in a booming voice, the Lord said, "Because you have tried your best to be faithful to Me in all ways, I will grant you one wish." The biker pulled over and said, "Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over anytime I want." The Lord said, "Your request is Materialistic. Think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking! The supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific! The concrete and steel it would take! It will nearly exhaust several natural resources. I can do it, but it is hard for Me to justify your desire for worldly things. Please take a little more time and think of something that would honor and glorify Me." The biker thought about it for a long time. Finally he said, "Lord, I wish that I could understand my wife. I want to know how she feels inside, what she's thinking when she gives me the silent treatment, why she cries, what she means when she says nothing's wrong, and how I can her truly happy." The Lord replied, "You want two lanes or four on that bridge?"

  7. Rawkkiddoh says Hey congrats on the publish, I thought it was a great read

  8. Dale says Thanks guys, but seriously, nothing could have been improved?

  9. Rawkkiddoh says Dale, as much as I love music, I have never even attempted to write a review for a record. I am in awe of people who can do it, let alone do it well. I got the vibe of the record based on your review. One part I liked a lot was the comparing of the music to the buzzing of mosquitoes. Things like that paint a picture, at least for me it did. I would say if you want to improve, head over to crashpryors page or puffmagic, both of those guys write great reviews and take notes. As for yours, I would not change a thing, keep in mind someone wanted to post it on their site, that alone should make you pat your back

  10. fairportfan says 86. The *LORD* saith unto MOSES 87. BEHOLD, I am the *LORD GOD* of Israel 88. And I have some Good news for thee and yet some Bad, also 89. And MOSES saith unto the *LORD* 90. What, *LORD*, might the Good news be? 91. And the *LORD* saith unto MOSES 92. Smite thou the surface of the waters of the Red Sea with thy rod, and then shall I breathe upon the waters and part them, that *MY* People might cross dry shod 93. And, when once thou standeth upon the far shore, and seest PHARAOH's Army still pursuing in thy steps, 94. Raise thou they rod, and cry to *ME*, and then shall I release the waters, 95. And then shall they swiftly roll back to their wonted place, whelming PHARAOH's chariots, that none may escape to continue to pursue. 96. For am I not the *Lord GOD* of ISRAEL, and have I not sworn that *MY* people shall be free? 97. Then saith MOSES 98. Indeed, *LORD* this is Good news indeed; what, then, might be the Bad news? 99. And then saith the *LORD* unto MOSES 100. Needs must you write the environmental impact statement.

  11. Dale says Good point, Kev; Crash and Puff are both really good writers. Crash darn well better be, since that's how his bread gets buttered. I'm grateful that I've been on MOG, and have access to such talented writers. fairport, that must be that new ISO9001 Version Old Testament. I'll stick with good ol' King James, heh.

  12. Neill says I haven't heard the whole album but aren’t Battles some sort of Indie super group, with ex-Helmet drummer John Stainer and jazz man Tyondal Braxton? Whatever you put in a review some smart-arse will always come up with something else, but it was very well written. I may even buy it!

  13. Augusts1 says You had you're review of the Placebo concert published on the Taxi site too, so this isn't you're first article published. Silly neph, lol. Good job though.

  14. Dale says You're correct Neill, they are some sort of super-group, the drummer is from Helmet and someone else is from Prefuse 73. Figures you'd be the smart-aleck to come up with something else! ;) That Placebo review doesn't count, it's essentially the review I did for MOG, but without the lyrics. This review didn't appear anywhere else but my HD.

  15. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says I think you did one hell of a job. You were fair and honest......and it was very well written.

  16. chucky says I think it was a great review - especially the part about evil marching squirrels, which I know wasn't your line but at least you were bright enough to put it in there.

  17. Dale says How could I not put it in? That's comedy gold. Kez says it's all she can think of when she hears that song, and she really likes Battles. hehe

  18. Oatmeal says I liked it, straight to the songs. Really the only common thing that was missing was some "insider" clue or revealing "background". But really that stuff is uneccessary if you are talking about listening to something new that does not have many obvious take off points from other rock records right now. I actually love the single. Read up on them, you got Stanier right, but Braxton was a guest on a past Prefuse 73 album. Prefuse is a one man operation by Scott Herren, perhaps my favorite artist from the past five years. Battles and Prefuse will be touring together apparently. One of the other fellas was in a band called Don Caballero, which I know nothing about. Anyhow, keep writing, I will try to up on you and post a review sometime soon, I have also never posted in the genre of critical review.

  19. chucky says Well - she hit the nail on the head. As soon as I started watching the video I realized how inspired her comment was.

  20. Anna says Very nice, bro. I always liked track by track reviews and in a bulletin form. Long passages distract me, while bulletins keep me focused. And major props on the Evil marching squirrels thingy :D

  21. Dale says Aww thanks, I was hoping you'd like it. :D
