What The ? Coverage

Posted almost 5 years ago
I barely remember downloading this oddball cover from an IRC channel back in '99. Yes that would be Tiffany, the mall queen of 80's fame, with industrial/EBM veterans Front Line Assembly, taking aim at a classic from U2. I think it works surprisingly well, to be honest.Should this pique your interest, "you might like this U2 tribute album from US goth/darkwave label Cleopatra Records.":http://www.u2wanderer.org/disco/trib003.htmlTo quote the label shill:"Unlike most tribute albums, this one actually has some names most people can regonize or have some passing familiarity with. Tiffany, Information Society, Heaven 17 all had hits in the 1980s, although their careers have faded somewhat since that time. (Yes that is the same Tiffany who sang "I Think We're Alone Now")The artists on this album put their own spin on U2 classics, instead of straight "try to sound like U2" covers, which makes this one of the more interesting U2 tribute albums."Umm ... enjoy?

  1. Puffmagic says huh. drum track by Richard D. James? It's actually not that terrible. Hey, at least it's not a bunch of corporate jackasses covering "One".

  5. Dale says Whoa, Puff, that's twenty times worse! U2 used to brainwash us into liking another corporate merger; that's pure evil!

  6. Puffmagic says Yeah, I think they got sued for it actually, which is way cool.

  7. Dale says Umm, that was to your first comment, hahahahahahahaha. Oh, you kids and your Debbie Gibson infatuations. I "missed" that album, and the subsequent marketing, as I was being a good missionary. chul, that's no rumor, I heard Tiffany talk about it on a VH1 interview. Hey, do what you gotta do, right? (urp)

  11. Dale says No worries, I'll just buy lots of ear guards so the kiddies can sleep soundly through the basslines, because you KNOW you're not bothering me! :D

  13. Dale says Ten steps ahead of you, doll; Anna's scoped out some prime real estate, an abandoned hotel on Santorini island, and I've ordered the T3 line and wireless routers.

  15. Anna says I'm game with the colony! MOGgers & MOGgettes united ;) We will take over the world..starting from Santorini.... Lock up your sons (especially the handsome, basslines-loving, bangs-having ones). :)

  16. Dale says OK, sis, go talk to the realtors, make it so! The huge weekly festivals (what band wouldn't want to play for a colony of MOGgers?) should provide enough funds. We'll take application, starting tomorrow.

  20. Dale says Yup, not the most aggressive FLA track one will ever hear, more in line with mellower singles like "The Blade". I'm still giggling over this becoming a hit in Greece.

  21. mickimicki says Even knowing this is Tiffany, I don't recognize her (from my inevitable memories of "I think we're alone now". Well the cover's not too bad, Frontline Assembly are very mellow by their standards, and it's one of the U2 songs I like. And I guess that's my problem with it: The original is o.k., so I don't really "need" the cover... while the compilation might be interesting, especially if it was newer... I might like newer U2 songs IF AND WHEN Bono's -whine- voice is removed from them... yeah, my bad... it makes me want to bang my head against a wall..

  22. deadflowers says Any post that mentions Front Line Assembly is worth reading...interesting cover. Not something I would have thought of, but it does work surprisingly well. Not sure if I would hunt it down again but it's interesting...and Tiffani!

  23. Hopper says The remix works very well with a song that is terrible to begin with in my opinion. Surprised though? Not really, whenever you have creative artist such as Bill Leeb & friends in the mix, disappointment is not a factor.
