EMCD at work - Cranes

Posted almost 5 years ago
[WARNING] Possibly annoyingly high girlish vocals ahead. Fair warning!*Starblood*Cranes are a band from Portsmouth, England. The constant members of the band are Alison Shaw (vox/guitar) and her half-brother Jim (drums/guitar). Their music effortlessly veers from brutal guitars and tribal drums to effortlessly beautiful piano treatments, but the common feature on all their songs is Alison's instantly recognizable voice. Impossibly high naturally (no helium was ingested in the making of these videos), it remains their signature, although also a large obstacle to enjoying their music.*Tomorrow's Tears*In the US, there was quite a buzz about this band in 1992, as they were opening for The Cure on their Wish tour. However, that buzz did not lead to mass acceptance, which is fine with me. This is not music that the masses could appreciate. Meh, their loss. There is beauty all around...

  1. snakama says The first time I saw the cranes live was during the wish tour, and while I was fan of their music prior to seeing them live, I was totally hooked afterwards.

  2. Dale says I wish I could have seen that tour, but I was newly married and dead broke. I heard second-hand accounts similar to your own, though. Sigh.

  3. Amy Honey says i used to have a Cranes cassette that i listened to so much it fell apart... thanks for reminding me about them, i really should replace that in my collection.

  7. Zeroskilz says This is a great band. Yeah, her voice is a bit annoying, but in the context of the music, I think sounds good. Whatever happened to them? Didn't they split the band?

  8. Dale says Their last release was Particles and Waves, which came out in 2004. I just checked out their label website, and they are recording a new album, and they're pointing toward an autumn 2007 release.

  11. Augusts1 says Heard of them but hadn't heard any of their music. Reminds me of early "Garlands" era Cocteau Twins & Dead Can Dance. Liking them, thanx!

  18. Jammy Jeff says You know Dale, when I look at your music collection and your Desert Island discs, this band seem to fit in seamlessly with the rest. Judging from the video they were making a splash in Liechstenstein, Lillestrom Norway, and Ghent in Belgium, and yet I haven't heard of them. Mind you, I was DJing a lot at that time and they're not what you'd call club music.

  19. Dale says No, these songs here wouldn't be considered club music, although Robert Smith did a remix of their single "Lilies" from the Forever album, that could have had dancefloor application. This fits in with the rest, though? Hmm. I've always thought that I listen to a diverse range of artists and genres, but maybe I don't. Mind, I don't take your comment as pejorative at all, just that it gives me reason to reflect.

  20. Anna says Sorry, bro, I'm with Ash. I did listen to the vids and the mp3, but the voice is a barrier to me. "(no helium was ingested in the making of these videos" ahahhahahha
