EMCD back on the job - Lush

Posted almost 5 years ago
*For Love*Now that are notifications are back, I can once again feel free to infect the MOG with music-crack all the live-long day. MUWAHAHAHAHAHA!Today, Lush's excellent cover of the Wire track "Outdoor Miner" has been coursing through my PC, and I felt the need to share.Lush came along my way from a short interview in Details magazine in spring 1991. I was intrigued, and snapped up the Gala album, which neatly compiled their early UK EP's, with the "Sweetness and Light" single on top.Speaking of sweetness, the first thing that strikes me about Lush's music is the sugar-sweet vocals of Miki Berenyi, especially when paired with guitarist/singer Emma Anderson. Initially, their guitars were loud and droning, in classic Cocteau Twins direction, which makes sense, given that Robin Guthrie produced the Scar EP and debut proper album Spooky.By second album Split, Lush had smoothed out the more abstract guitar lines, and many of the effects, as Miki and Emma became more comfortable in their voices. However, they could still kick up some righteous noise, as evidenced with:*Hypocrite*After their excellent Lovelife album came out, Lush looked poised to capitalize on the Brit-pop scene fueled by Oasis and Blue. Alas, twas not to be. Drummer Chris Acland hung himself, and the band went into hiding, announcing their disbanding two years later._Sigh._ What could have been? However, Emma Anderson is still involved in music, as part of the band Sing-Sing. While not quite as addictive as Lush, they're quite good as well; their album Sing-Sing And I is quite nice.Enjoy!

  1. ebuzzmiller says dude, I LOVE Lush. Saw the on Lalapalooza #2, they seemed a vit out of place next to Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Ministry and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, but man, they rocked. Miki was so damned cute too. "Light From A Dead Star" is one my faves, but "For Love" is probably the definitive Lush track - thanks for posting Dale!

  2. Dale says Sigh, was newly married and dead broke, or I'd have gone to that Lollapalooza in a heartbeat. You forgot the Jesus and Mary Chain on that bill. Gah!

  3. Archie Leach23 says I always loved this band as well...& I completely agree about "For Love" - that song perfectly represents the Lush sound I think. I saw them in '91 in Detroit, then in '92 @ Lolapalooza, and was blown away both times, especially the 1st, being in a venue of only about 1,000 people or so.

  7. 1234chainsaw says "For Love" is what got me back then into Lush as well. Dale, you don't seem to be drawing in any new addicts, just the old Lushies.

  8. Dale says Give it time. Either that, or I need to get more obscure.

  18. aedjp says I have Gala somewhere on vinyl! I seem to remember it was printed on the inside of the sleeve... Another great cover was "hey hey helen". And wasn't there a cocteau twins connection as well?

  19. Dale says Yup; as I noted above, Robin Guthrie produced the Scar EP, and the Spooky LP. Personally, I think he did a lot to kill their sound on Spooky; even "Superblast!" barely rises out of the mix. Oh, OK sis, I actually thought the vocals would grate, but I'm delighted you like them, and appreciate the effort. That Pekka's a troublemaker, I'm telling you.
