WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

EMCD at work - Ambulance LTD

Posted over 2 years ago
*Heavy Lifting*Ambulance LTD are another band, out of the New York area, that was snapped up in the wake of Interpol's massive success. After a short homonymous EP in 2003, they released their full-length album, simply titled LP, in April 2004.Their sound is suggestive of older shoegaze bands like Ride or Pale Saints, but Ambulance LTD has something special those bands lacked: a dynamic frontman with a gorgeous voice. Marcus Congleton's vocals earn him a prominent place in the mix, as evidenced in this video:*Stay Where You Are*Anyway, they released the New English EP late last year, and it was OK, but here's my question: Why is it a sign of maturity when bands, like Ambulance LTD and BRMC, step away from the shoegaze sound into something more organic? You had a good sound; PEOPLE LIKED IT! WHY CHANGE?OK, rant over. Check out LP, it's worth the investment.

  1. kristiana says Sounds decent. What do you mean by "organic"? I guess because some musicians aren't playing what they think others want, but what THEY want/need to be playing at any given time (whether these guys fall into this category I wouldn't know). :)

  3. Dale says K, by "organic", usually music critics mean "less effects". I guess I'd best review yr home page, huh Kev?

  4. kristiana says Oh, ok. How strange. I guess that's an example of why I avoid music critics!

  5. tybees says Yup, great stuff Dale. I had downloaded this a long time ago on your word but never paid it much attention. Until one day a few weeks ago I fell asleep on my couch and woke up to "Sugar Pill" playing. I thought to myself "what's this? It's incredible", and the rest is history.

  7. Jammy Jeff says The late John Peel used to play these a fair amount. I've never quite worked out why they weren't much bigger. BTW agree with your view on BRMC, but apparently their new album is back to basics again. I haven't heard it yet, but I'm told it's excellent.

  9. Augusts1 says This group sounds good, reminds me of MBV on the 1st vid but w/intelligible vocals/lyrics. They sound like Interpol on the 2nd vid. Interesting, not heard of them.
