Am I _allowed_ to like this song?

Posted about 5 years ago
I've loved the music of Ladytron ever since I first heard "Playgirl". I love Helen Marnie's sexy-cool vocals, and I love the vintage synths. I love that they came up with electroclash three years before Fischerspooner and Felix Da Housecat popularized the genre. So, when I found out that they had a new album out two years ago, I found the first snippets I could find. "Sugar" especially grabbed me, because it was so unlike anything they had done before, with the roaring guitar line. I fell in love, and fell hard. Then I saw the video. Uh-oh. I'm kinda slow about catching on to lyrics in songs, so I sometimes miss references to things I would not partake in. The video for "Sugar", however, made the drug references plain, from the first opening shots of the "Doctor Robert" sign on the door. (Side note: if you say you're familiar with the Beatles' album Revolver, and didn't get the reference, we need to talk.)See for yourself:Another thing from this video: Someone got hold of Mira Aroyo, taught her hair and makeup, and told her that facial expressions are a good thing. Is it just me, or does she look kinda hot in this video? OK, moving on...

  1. smithco says Sorry, no, you're not allowed to like this song. It's too bad though. Had you not asked permission and just decided to like it anyways, you probably would have gotten away with it.

  2. Dale says Fine, I'll have to take it off my playlists, and be content with "Destroy Everything You Touch" and the rest of the album. :( Worst part: I put this on a mix CD, before I realized the content, and had to go back later and apologize for putting a "drug song" on the mix. She hadn't picked it up either.

  6. ebuzzmiller says dale - what was the mix CD in question called, "Puritan Favorites Volume 7"? just because an artist references drugs, it doesn't mean they're endorsing drug use - whats the big deal? if we were only allowed to like music by bands that didn't either use drugs or incorporate drug experiences into their art, we'd all be listening to classical and a handful of gospel artists.....

  7. fairportfan says Who cares? I don't do drugs - hardly even alcohol, for that matter - never have. Stilll, one of my favourite rockyroll movies (*Get Crazy*) features Electric Larry, the world's fastest dope dealer as a Good Guy.

  8. Dale says I know, I'm kind of a prude that way. But the title was close, it was actually "Squeaky-Clean Mormon Favorites Volume 12". ;)

  9. Kate says Hey Dale, you might dig the music of ex-Ladytron bassist Pop Levi: http://www.myspace.com/poplevi My brother's played a couple shows with him. He's an elegant freak with some cool retro sounds.

  10. Dale says Wait, Ladytron had a bassist?!? I figured it was all bass synth. Thanks Kate, I'll check that out now.

  11. ebuzzmiller says wow i didn't know they had a bassist either and Dale, need I remind you? Kevin Shields still can't donate blood because anyone that got a transfusion from him would probably be high for the next decade..... :-)

  13. Nixne Svix says you might like "Scarling" too Dale, its an old friends band . Jessicka used to front Jack Off Jill in the mid nineties , of the scene in Fort Lauderdale where Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids (as they used to be called) had just crawled out of via Trent Reznor........Scarling is a bit heavier , but similar id say, at least vocally. I would d/l some but , well I still cant find anything......ill find something here for ya........ill be back.

  14. chucky says Sure you can like it. Willfully misconstrue the lyrics to mean sugar in the southern sense and you're golden. Was Mira Aroyo the singer or the other chick? If she was the singer, it's just you. If she was the other chick, yep she's the hawtness.

  15. lemontwist says Buzz has a point. My music library would be like 25 songs if I took out all the ones with drug references. Probably 2 would remain if I got rid of the sex songs...

  17. Dale says Willful misconstruction; I think I can delude myself enough to pull that off. I feel so free now. Thank you, Ash. That really doesn't help, though, since both sing in their music in general, and this song in particular. Mira Aroyo's the one on the right here:

  24. fistula spume says How can you have your Ladytron if you don't eat your meat! I like this song. I don't see why you can't like it. It's a good song. I agree with Kate. You gotta check out Pop Levi. That's some tasty tunes. You know though... You don't have to take Ladytron's Sugar. You just don't get them if you don't. Decisions decisions...

  25. Zeroskilz says I didn't realize that Ladytron had a bassist either. Now I have more research to do. When the band plays live, they have quite a few more people on stage. I remember at least one drummer and two guitar players. My friend has pics from the show, but I've failed to even get the pics from the ice bar; let alone the concert. I'll have to call and complain this weekend. To answer the original question, yes, you can like the song, but it cannot be your favorite. Beauty*2 has to be your fave. And, that is final; maybe. Looking forward to their new album. I think I seen them on a list for releases this year.

  30. chucky says Well, that one chick seemed to be singing more or only singing. Ok - yes the one on the right is super hot. Are y'all suggesting with these hair and makeup comments that she usually isn't? I can't imagine...I've got to go find pictures of her.

  31. Dale says Yeah Cam, I know. :'( Ashley, let this be the evidence you require. Someone put her through some kind of transformation, because before then, she was less attractively coiffed. She's the one on the left this time. This is promo material for their first album.

  32. chucky says That is an unfortunate picture. Haha. I did a GIS on her and she was hot in all the pictures I saw.

  33. Dale says They're probably all recent, as in less that two years ago. More evidence, and more reason to embed another Ladytron video, this time for the song "Seventeen" from their Light & Magic album.

  34. chucky says About 50 seconds has loaded for me now. I think I caught her reflection there at the end . Still looks good to me, but I am overly fond of quirky too, so maybe I'm not the best judge heh. I have to tell you though, the lyrics are chapping my...behind. "They only want you when you're 17, when you're 21 you're no fun?" Bah! I have a decade on 21.

  35. Universalis says The music there is just another bad clone of Kraftwerk alas... but the video showing those girls danceing in their grey almost nazi-like uniforms is amazing, on one side of the mirrors you are in 1940 and behind the blind side you are in 2140 !! funny stuff thanks ;-))

  42. Sweetbro says the infamous "evil music pusher" didn't even pick up drug reference? what hope is there for the rest of us? And, I kinda liked the song anyway. And, I wouldn't mind if you pushed some new music on me... I am currently in the market (just don't tell ashley on me :X)

  43. Dale says I'm kinda dense when it comes to drug references, it's true. Either that, or I like to pretend they're not there. On this topic, I would highly recommend Ladytron's most recent album Witching Hour, and Snowden's album Anti-Anti. And tell Ashley how delighted I am that +she+ is pushing Mew for me. I might even have to give her the Mew angel avatar if she keeps this up.

  44. Augusts1 says I'd say it's more of a SEX reference than a drug reference although the vid does give it another level of meaning. You can like whatever the hell you want regardless of what it's about. Way back in my conservative christian days I loved Depeche Mode's "Some Great Reward" album despite the S&M & blasphemous refs. in the lyrics. To be human is to be dichotomous & contradictory, so celebrate it, lmao!!!!
