Sleepy tuesday, need something dreamy

Posted over 3 years ago

About 10:30 last night, my wife got the call we'd been expecting for some time. Her sister was having serious contractions, so she was going to the hospital with her mom, so Melissa would need to go over and watch the house, and the soon-to-be big brother Brodie. So I held down the fort, and didn't sleep a wink. And I am pleased to announce that I am once again the uncle to a healthy baby boy. He's a bit preemie, so he'll need to stay at the hospital for a while, but soon enough I'll get some pictures for you to see. Brodie's a heartbreaker, so I'm sure Conor will be as well.

I have to admit this is a much better reason to stay awake than my usual reason; work. Bleech. :P

I think Andi had mentioned something recently about listening to a lot of ethereal and shoegaze albums since the calendar turned to October, and fall began in earnest. It's just now getting cool enough in Kansas that the leaves are starting to turn, so it seemed a good time to break out a few albums that I'd been meaning to listen to in their entirety, in the ethereal/shoegaze/dream-pop vein.

First up late last night was Airiel's album The Battle of Seeland. I found it to be a nicely varied album. For each fluffy pretty cloud like "Sugar Crystals", there was a big shock of lightning like "Mermaid In A Manhole", adding a bit of vim and vigor to the proceedings.

This morning, I started my day with The Daysleepers' debut album Drowned In A Sea of Sound. Maybe not as varied, but a lovely album full of Robin Guthrie-esque echoed and reverbed guitar swells. Then "Tiger in the Sea" kicks in with its meaty bass. Yum.

Now I think I'll dive into an album I've ignored for far too long, Seefeel's album Quique. See ya later. :)

EDIT: Didn't make it to track 2 of Quique, because I felt that I needed something peppier. So right now I'm rocking the debut from Ultra Vivid Scene. Not better, just more closely aligned to my needs at present.

Well hello ladies, fancy meeting you both here. :)

I recently posted "Think Tank" on a Shoegaze Saturday post, but grabbed it and brought it in here for maximum visibility. "Tiger By The Sea" really caught my ear this morning; it acts as the fulcrum on which the whole album moves. So glad you liked them. :)

Yes, Conor was born this morning at 1AM or so. This makes me an uncle four times over, which wouldn't be so bad if my oldest niece wasn't almost ten. Or if my s-i-l's weren't so much younger. Egad!

Your fellow shoegeezer congratulates you on acquiring a new nephew. Well done, Dale! PS. I particularly enjoyed The Daysleepers, and they have the most on-the-money shoegazy band name I've heard in years.

I can't do too much spoiling or my kids start to wonder why I don't do that for them, haha.

Daysleepers is an especially apt name for a shoegze band, no doubt. Does a good description of their dreamy sound. Aaaah, got stuck playing "Tiger In The Sea" another couple of times. :)
