Videos with a point: Death In Vegas

Posted about 1 year ago
I think that the denizens of this website, more than most, realize that there is much more potential within the music video medium than pointless tittilation. So, I may be preaching to the choir. Not that it's ever stopped me before. ;)Anyway, I was listening to some Death In Vegas as I ran yesterday, and it got me recollecting on some of the amazing videos they've done. They're a group that hasn't got a lot of MOG love, so I can kill two birds with one stone here.First, the video for "Dirge". It perfectly befits the song, but beware: If you're not feeling a bit misty by the end, you're desensitized. As the electronics start slow and build to a crescendo before fading away, and as Dot Allison wails away mournfully, the video shows the obituaries of a number of people killed by firearms on ONE DAY. Now, your stance on firearm rights shouldn't matter in order to feel something from this video.(Personal note: I don't want to take your guns away, but I don't want any of my own, thanks. They freak me out, to be honest.)Next up is "Dirt". As befits the song title, if you could bottle decadence and present it in video format, this is what it would look like. Now, this is one of my favorite DIV songs, but I've tried very hard to remain blissfully ignorant of what that creepy kid's saying in that sample. So far, so good. Anyway, back to the video. Just about every bastion of goodness gets a look: family, children, religion, and the military. Anyway, enjoy, but I need to shower now. Heh.

  1. mocha louder says nice choice - Death In Vegas is one of those bands that i absolutely love some songs - and meh, not so much, with others. Dirge is fantastic though... and - of course -- Aisha.... and yeah - i much prefer videos with a point, or even a nice little storyline to follow - as opposed to just some band playing in a warehouse - not that the "i'm in a band" videos are all bad - but it's nice to see something that goes somewhere.

  2. Dale says True that, they are kinda hit or miss, even on their Best Of.

  3. Lizziegreeneyes says Heavy heavy in the first video - I really appreciate the simplicity & weight of the message. Thanks for posting *Dirge*. Pointy teeth scare me, as do most of the images in the *Dirt* vid... but the music sucks me into it's rockindirtyguitarelectroweb...

  4. Dale says Yeah, that initial screen swipe for "Dirt" is pretty creepy huh? Eep!

  6. gympumpkin says Great post, Dale. That first video is pretty depressing. Some of it went to fast to read it all, but it really makes you think. And I agree, the pointy teeth are frightening!

  7. Dale says Here then, you can hear an edit of "Dirt" without the creepy visuals. That video for "Dirge" is dead depressing. So many sad stories.

  8. jenny says Oh, Dale, I had totally forgotten about Dirge...what a great bassline, hmmm? Thank you for the reminder and the more-than-usually thought provoking videos. I'm not sure I want to be educated in music videos, in general, though. It's too short a form to really learn anything, you know? And most of the "messages" these people have to convey are pretty simplistic.

  9. Max Load says I commend DIV guitarist Ian to you. Not sure what he's up to these days.

  10. Dale says Jenny: I suppose you're right, it is too short a medium for anything in-depth. At the very least, they can provoke a reaction. And the messages are simplistic probably due to the length of time. Better than nothing, though. Max: thanks for the tip.

  12. Anna says Very very well done, bro. You spoiled my morning, but well done anyway :P I have nothing more to add, except the fact that it bummed me out that, over time, those elements I love in their first album, gradually disappeared, know what I mean?
