MOGachella 2008 - The Players

Posted over 1 year ago
First, a track from the band that opened the main stage on Coachella Saturday; this song was their set-opener. They really did a great job starting Saturday off on a good note. Now, to serve notice of those who attended Coachella 2008 together this past weekend, and proceeded to have The. Best. Vacation. Ever."+Amber+":http://mog.com/amber: The main organizer, our mother hen, bus driver, and shutterbug extraordinaire, not to mention the sister with whom I could commiserate on the state of our teenage sons. And SO many :::BigSquooshyHugz:::, I lost count."+Jaye+":http://mog.com/jaye: Amber's longtime concert buddy, and her husband's last-minute stand-in. I have to give her props for being the only woman with the guts to sit in the back seat of the bus EVERY time."+Blair+":http://mog.com/satisfiedmind2: Our Coachella veteran, Ohio state buff, and quite possibly the tallest guy in indie-fandom. Dude sings a mean "Sabotage", and pretty much does everything like a rockstar."+Henry+":http://mog.com/Me_and_the_Horse_I_Rode_In_On: What else can be said about the guy who could easily pass as Ben Gibbard's blonde cousin, has the best accent ever, and can actually sing but passed on karaoke? Time to catch a rising star here, he's gonna be HUGE, at least in our hearts."+August+":http://mog.com/augusts1: The man to call on for sure when your drunk neighbor knocks at 2AM to tell you that the water from the gutter under the cars looks like fire. And the guy who borrowed the BIGGEST air mattress EVER. If we had had a flood, all 8 of us could have floated to safety on it."+Kate+":http://k8girl.multiply.com: (Sorry, she deleted her MOG page) Without a doubt, the best navigator EVER. She managed to handle the radio, directions, and even fixed the Garman at 4AM after I hit the wrong place on the touch screen and fouled it up. For me at least, the greatest X-factor; I'd not talked to Kate as much as the others, but I feel like I know her much better now. An absolute sweetheart."+Lizzie+":http://mog.com/Lizziegreeneyes: Yes, she's EXACTLY the same in person as she is on the computer screen. Just a non-stop bundle of energy, positive vibes, and Glen Hansard fandom. If I wasn't getting a hug from Amber, I was getting a hug from Lizzie. Again, not that I minded one bit. :) How did I get so lucky, as to have two green-eyed sisters this cool? And me. You know me.Lest I forget, two other supporting MOGgers that played a vital role in the festivities:"+Mark+":http://mog.com/Pop_Savant: Helped get Lizzie to and from the timeshare that was our home from Friday afternoon until Monday early morning. Attended quite a few shows with us, and came over for Sunday evening dinner. Good guy, vast musical knowledge. I would be sure to be in frequent contact with him at any festival, but especially SXSW; just sayin'."+Alex+":http://mog.com/caliscrnwrtr: Didn't come to Coachella with us, but did provide me safe harbor at her office until we managed to get hold of Amber and the rest. More on that later.Oh yes, one more thing, quote most often heard at MOGachella House: "@#%$#@%! Oh whoops, sorry Dale!" Never ceased to bring a smile to my face, not that anyone was swearing, but that they tried SO hard to not swear. So sweet, really. :)

  1. satisfiedmind2 says Sitting in traffic and gridlock after hours in a desert sun should NEVER be that much fun...there truly wasn't a single moment when I wasn't happy to be where I was...thanks again guys...

  2. Dale says I know, even the traffic was bearable, except maybe for poor Amber. That had to stink on ice, having to do all the driving. :(
    Permalink posted 04/29/2008
  3. amber says stink on ice...wouldn't that be a good thing? I mean, since I cools down stuff and then maybe the smell wouldn't be so bad? Oh, what do I know? Driving was my pleasure, although it did bring out my aggressive side, my competitive side, and my ability to make up my own lanes (why wouldn't they use all that space to the left? Not too smart, IMO). And I've haven't laughed so much, so hard as when Blair was attacked by the killer...oh, wait. That deserves it's own post. :) big big BIG hugs to you, my brother and the filler of all my lap top's memory
    Permalink posted 04/29/2008
  4. Dale says Yes, that attack deserves its own post, and since you had the best vantage point, I think you should do it. I had no view of the faces, it was everyone's reactions that got me going. And not to be pedantic, but I didn't fill your memory, I filled your hard drive. Have you started listening to all that music yet? :)

  5. Augusts1 says Btw, I'm also the man to call on if you need updates of the bands you aren't able to see. Oh & also the man to capture crazed, rabid CRICKETS from unsuspecting moggers, haha!

  6. Dale says Good point August, I would have had zero info on Swervedriver if it weren't for your intrepid reporting. MAJOR props for that!

  7. Augusts1 says Intrepid indeed @= P Thanks!(plus I drug Kate & Lizzie to see them too)

  8. Mike the Knife says Guys and gals, it's killin' me - KILLIN' ME! - that I couldn't hook up with some or all of you on Thursday night, before I had to fly out of L.A. The only consolation is the rad and brill time that you seem to have had (judging from what I already read). Next chance, we gots to try and connect...

  15. Lizziegreeneyes says heheh we're all such PLAYAHS ;) I can tell you right now, my first post will be... Music, what music ?!? It was all about the MOGtiply love :) We really were blessed with great weather, great music, but *GENIUS friends* with whom we shared the experience of a lifetime. One minor addition (as you are the author, this really has to come from one of the other partners in crime) *Dale:* The best brother a gal could have, so thoughtful, killer banana pancake maker - and did I mention a stellar meat sauce that knocked my socks off, with the greatest of hearts. A man who never ceases to bring a permagrin to my face, whether just in thought or in person. When he *SQEEEs*, you can't help but SQEEE with him. His sisters are all the better having him in the family :) (and I know Amber, Anna, Erin etc. would all agree in a heartbeat) His hugs, some of the best I've ever been fortunate enough to receive... MOGgers, the gifts that keep on givin ;)

  16. Torch says I've been getting the blues a little, knowing that my schedule would not permit me to travel to any of these festivals this year. This is just further verification that I need to definitely hit a few of these next year!

  17. amber says Whoops...hard drive, memory, whatEVER...all I knows is I got lots lots LOTS of music to listen to..and an external hard drive to buy. I haven't had time to listen to anything but this weekend is all about getting my ears back into shape for the next marathon. Sasquatch anyone? Anyone? I am sad because Sasquatch will be missing most of my MOG family. sigh... I think the cricket story must be told from several perspectives...perhaps all in the same hour...coodinate out watches and all that. What a scream! And in 2 case, literally. hee hee
    Permalink posted 04/30/2008
  18. Lizziegreeneyes says I will rock it from the perspective of the cricket-podium... being next to the silent scream was a grand perspective - had I been able to see the face to go along with it though... that would have been classic !!! We also have to coordinate a D^#ckleback story from a couple perspectives ;) Amber - you gotta be all in on that one !!!

  19. gympumpkin says Sounds like a great time! You all better do it again next year because hopefully I will have a job by then and be able to go!

  20. Dale says Mike: It would have been great to meet you as well. We had a blast on Thursday, it would have been that much better with you. Maybe next time. ardy: Yup, I plan on dragging this out, mostly because I want to continue to savor the moments we spent together. Michael: It was the best MOG-festival I've ever attended, but those who attended the London MOG-meet might claim otherwise. Then again, all of us living together did keep us close, although we split for many of the shows. Francois, you rotten __magouilleur__, you. Heh. I wasn't at the Sunday show, but heard all about the pig from the other MOGgers. So I have a ready-made alibi. :P Jenny: Yes, your invitation is always open. Maybe SXSW? Lizzie: Oh sweet sister, it's so true, the MOGtiply love was key. The great music was really just a bonus, the cherry on top of all the fun we had together. I'm still amazed I was able to do anything in that tiny kitchen, with those tiny pots and pans. And no oven?!? Glad you enjoyed, because for me, cooking = love. That's how I show my love for my family; I feed them. Must be some Italian in me. ;) And thank you for the write-up, tho I'm not sure I fit all that. That person would be uber-mensch, or at least mensch-maschine. ;) And D@#*elback? You name it, you write it! Heehee! Steve: Seriously, spending a weekend with friends with live music is THE place to be! Do what you can, make it happen! Amber: Oh, how I wish I could join you at Sasquatch. I'm sure you and Anne and Jaye will have a great time. And hopefully, the hubby can make it. :) And someone better tell the cricket story before the entire MOG crashes in anticipation. Truly a legendary weekend for all; even when we weren't at our best, it was funny. :D

    Permalink posted 04/30/2008
  22. gympumpkin says I'm pretty sure I will be at Lollapalooza next year as well :)

I must say......................I have never met a nicer group of people in my life. I could hang out with you guys forever.

  28. Anna says This post is perfection. You guys are indescribable (the fabulous way). Perfection. Perfect perfection. What is "Ohio state buff"? "our drunk neighbor knocks at 2AM to tell you that the water from the gutter under the cars looks like fire" HAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHA "#%$#%! Oh whoops, sorry Dale!" ahhahaha I would have said that SO many times!
    Permalink posted 04/30/2008
  29. Anna says My comment, on the other hand, is not perfection. Evil HTML code (or whatever this is)!
    Permalink posted 04/30/2008
  30. RGM says Sounds like you guys had a great time. Amber: I take it, my buddy couldn't make it.
    Permalink posted 04/30/2008
  31. Dale says Anna: "Ohio State buff" means that Blair avisly follows the athletic teams from the Ohio State University. The drunken neighbor was too funny. He came up to our door and knocked at 2AM, when we've all finally made it home and are getting ready to sleep. I'm right next to the door, so the girls all ask me to open the door. The guy's all freaked out (I understand paranois is a common side effect of marijuana), and hollering that the car is on fire. I go out there and August follows. He's hollering and pointing from the second-floor balcony toward the cars below, and I realize what he's seeing. There's a trickle of water from the sprinklers, that is running under the cars, and the street lights are hitting just right so the water under the cars is reflecting the light. He thought it was fire. At this point, I leave him, but August sticks around for a long time to talk to him. Very weird, LOL. And yes, I have no doubt you'd have said that a thousand times a day. Ray: It was the best of times.
    Permalink posted 04/30/2008
  32. amber says Ray...I don't know if he made it but I didn't get a call. It's too bad because there's always room for one more at the asylum. ;)
    Permalink posted 04/30/2008
  33. Anna says Oh Dale. that's truly hysterical.....it's like a movie, tho instead of "Dude, where's your car?", you get "Dude, is your car on fire?" :P I see you're making plans for next year's festivals. HOW ABOUT A BRITISH ONE? C'mon, we want to meet you, too!
    Permalink posted 05/01/2008
  34. Dale says Aww, wish I could sweetie, but it's too expensive to fly to London. Someday ...
    Permalink posted 05/01/2008
  35. amber says I think we need to pick a festival--anywhere--and do some massive fund raising for it. Make a MOG ebay site where we can have a global garage sale...something. Raise money so that more people can go, even if it is in LONDON (how cool would that be?). There's always a way if you want it enough and are willing to work at it. Always.
    Permalink posted 05/01/2008
  36. Dale says I'm going to start squirreling away money starting now for next year's festivals. I know I'm down for Lolla 09, and will scrimp and save for Coachella 09. Beyond that, who knows? I am due a raise here in a couple of weeks, maybe I can start saving that money away as well. But there has to be a way to make the trip somehow.
    Permalink posted 05/01/2008
  37. Anna says Amber, that's a very cool idea. Also, I don't know what my situation next year will be, but if all goes well, I'll be living in London and MOGgers I've known for a long time (like you two lovlings) are more than welcome to stay with me. Maybe that will help with the overall cost? Unless I can only afford to live in a cardboard next to Thames. ahahhahahha
    Permalink posted 05/02/2008
  38. Dale says Airfare's the real killer expense, but if I got past that hurdle, I'd sleep in cardboard to attend a festival with my fellow Euro moggers. In a heartbeat.
    Permalink posted 05/02/2008
  39. amber says Me too...and we can pool our resources and make it affordable. Anna--you should be careful what you offer; we've seen how little space to sleep we ??really?? need. You may have MOGGERS sleeping in your loo. (am I ready for London or what?) We could seriously make this happen.
    Permalink posted 05/02/2008
  40. Anna says Sleeping in the bathtub or in an swing hanging from the light on the ceiling will never be frowned upon by me :)
    Permalink posted 05/02/2008
  41. Dale says Swing?!? That's eerily specific. 0_o
