WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

A lost nugget from Y2K

Posted about 1 year ago
I was enjoying a quiet evening here, geeking out the MP3 collection. (This entails using Media Monkey to ensure that every REM song has REM as the band name, not R.E.M. or some variant thereof. I know, I'm a dork. Anyway ...)I was flipping through Smashing Pumpkins, and hit upon this track, and thought, "Man, this song was AWESOME when it came out." Thing is, it still holds up. I wonder why it got so little love when it was released.I doubt the video helped; this was SP at their goth-wannabe peak. James Iha is seriously rocking the e-bow, and looking scarily like Michael Jackson. And what's with the pleather? Eeek!Anyway, dig the song anyway. I still do.

  2. I am says *(This entails using Media Monkey to ensure that every REM song has REM as the band name, not R.E.M. or some variant thereof. I know, I'm a dork. Anyway ...)* What a pain. Still 'Monkey' is one of the easiest to use. Great find. Like buried treasure.

  3. Dale says Actually, it was the year preceeding that kicked my butt, with all the preparations to make sure nothing happened. Of course, we did so well that everyone thought it was a big hoax. Not that I'm bitter...

  4. Mike the Knife says Ah. The REAL Smashing Pumpkins. That's more like it.

  5. Dale says I haven't even ensured that every song has its correct album art yet, Chris. __That__ will be painful, believe me.

  7. Dale says Maybe; this was the time of the "now that stupid '1979' song has me all sorts of pop fans, gotta scare them away" phase for the hairless wonder. Then again, I'm not with the guy 24/7, maybe he's freakier elsewhere. Just sayin' ...

  8. Augusts1 says Love this album. I remember they played that vid to death on MTV & personally I think there are much better songs on the rest of the album than this one, like 'Raindrops + Sunshowers', 'I Of The Mourning', 'Blue Skies Bring Tears' & my two faves, 'The Imploding Voice' & 'Heavy Metal Machine'.

  9. dachmo says But Dale technically it's How are your Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark filed, I hope not O.M.D.! or worse yet, OMD?

  10. Dale says I had a suspicion you'd be down, August. Not that I've got you figured out or anything, but though you'd like it. David, I went back and forth on that one for a while. Believe you me, I know that's how it's written on Reckoning (my fave REM album), but I went with the spelling used since Green. So I'm not so indie; meh.

  11. dachmo says I've got to check out this Media Monkey thing because I've probably lost a good 6 months out of my life just geeking out over my files. I'm starting to rethink my R.E.M. decisions. I hate when people plant seeds.

  12. Augusts1 says It's not like I've kept my love for SP a big secret Dale, so I'm not surprised you had a suspicion.

  13. ardyjormkiv says oh good, i'm glad i'm not the only one who obsessively organizes and edits my music files. i'm not surprised that it's you guys. album art is key! 'geeking out'...yeah that about describes it... i also love the smashing pumpkins, but i'm not sure if i've ever really heard this song! so thanks for enlightening me.

  14. B42 says I was in the hospital for back surgery that tear, all of the medical techie gear had little round green "Y2K OK" stickers on them, thought they were pretty cool, i still have one stuck inside my wallet. Smashing Pumpkins always a bit wild for my tastes but you know that. Perhaps we could amend amcd with ocd, OCAMCD ?

  15. Bartleby says That video was their demise. All the dubious aesthetics of MTV circa 1999 summed up in one clip. Scary indeed. It's always nice to walk down memory lane with you Dale. -- Regarding the spelling of REM, I have my doubts. The dots have their importance. Still, it's nice to hear that I'm not the only one with an OCD when it comes to M-Pea-Threes and other compressed file formats. Incidentally, have you tried the auto-tag feature on Winamp linked to Gracenote?

  16. Dale says David: I'm sowing seeds, muwahahahaha. August: True dat, must have been kept in my subconscious. ardy: Yup, so true, album art is crucial. Now, if Rockbox (my MP3 player firmware) would actually show album art, that would be sweet. Bruce: Yeah, I never got any of those Y2K OK stickers. Bah. Michael: I've not used that feature on Winamp, but I'm familiar with Gracenote from using Sony SonicStage, as I owned a Sony MP3 player. Wasn't impressed; it fouled up a few of my tags.

  21. Dale says Well Sturgell, my blogging has decreased in inverse proportion to my workload, which is killing me as I type. Then, there is the exercising and the family time.
