WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Blog Action Day 2009: Another take

Posted about 1 month ago

I was working with our local Boy Scout troop last night, and was trying to keep them from tearing up my friend's house by wrestling in it. One of them stopped and said, "You know, the house isn't really his; ultimately, it's the Lord's." Smart kid, and absolutely correct. However, he had forgotten an important principle: stewardship.

See, what's ours is ours, but not to use and abuse as we see fit. No, that's not the plan at all. On the contrary, it's the plan to see how well we take care of the things that have been given to us, even perhaps to improve upon them.

Climate change sounds so big and imposing; how on earth can one person, or even one family, expect to take on the challenge of reversing the damage done to the climate? However, it's the small things we can each do that, when accumulated with the actions of billions of others, that make real change happen.

Here's a few things:

  1. Try commuting more by foot or bicycle and less by automobile. Your waistline will thank you too.
  2. Plant a proper garden, with herbs and/or vegetables that you can use and reuse.
  3. Clean up after yourself when outdoors.

OK, enough preaching, on to the music.

"The planet's more [messed] up than I'll ever be." ... heehee. :)

Thank you, Dale. So many things we can do that are easy and yet so important. Great words and great music!

I always go walking, I decline the plastic bags they give you at stores, and do some other little things. With that said I always get a bit discouraged when I'm walking around at midnight through the city and every single store still has all its lights on. Now what good does that?

Not a bit of good, Stef, not a bit. Don't get too down though, every bit helps.

Forgot about those plastic bags. We get them, but reuse them as liners for our trashbins here @ home.

We always go shopping with our own canvas bags, and we have bought a couple of bags for life that we reuse for trash.

Luckily in the UK many stores charge for the plastic bags, so that's helping overall, and also they give you a separate recycling bin which is very encouraging! (these are some UK things I love in comparison to how Greece rolls...)

I'm not so sure, they bail out on homework more than they should. It's a pain in my neck, mostly because they're just like dear ol' Dad at that age.
