WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Raised on MTV #4: This Is Not A Rebel Song

Posted about 1 year ago
Ah, remember the days when MTV used to air videos? Now, scan even further back, and remember the very first years of MTV. They didn't have a large catalog of music videos, so in order to make the programming work, they showed full-length concerts every Saturday night. Some of the concerts were pretty good (Squeeze jumps to mind), some were forgettable (Rainbow ... yikes!)Some shows, however, were etched indelibly in my memory. Chief among those was U2 at Red Rocks. This video above, as the first song from the show and the lead single, really captures why this show became so legendary, at least in my mind. Just the opening scene, with the three huge flames lighting everything, catch the eye. And bless his heart, look at how young, fit and earnest Bono is! The sweeping movements, the waving of the white flag, the crouch at the end, signaled that this is a performer to watch.Interestingly enough, when I finally went back and listened to War, the studio version of this song didn't hold a candle to the live version. I miss the scene where Bono gets the audience to sing together "NO MORE!" in mid-bridge.My friend Eric had managed to tape this concert, and it became daily viewing at his house. Every day after school, we'd get off the bus, I'd run into the house and throw down my backpack, and head over to his place to munch on whatever snacks he had handy and watch U2 at Red Rocks one more time. One of the things I hope to remedy this year is the sad fact that I have never attended a concert at Red Rocks. That wouldn't be a big deal, except I lived in Colorado for SEVEN YEARS! WHAT WAS I WAITING FOR?!? This year, I hope to attend the Monolith Festival at Red Rocks this year, and meet up with some beloved Colorado MOGgers in the process.I wonder if they still use those flames, because that was really, really cool.

  6. kristiana says That concert was momentous for me too! I think I was in grade six when my dad rented it, thought I might like it. Up to that point Prince was about as far out as I had gotten. I was very moved by it, to say the least. It was a band with something to say, proclaim. And I remember thinking "wow, maybe you really can change the world with music." That was huge.

  7. SA says I have never seen the concert, but gosh I do wish that MTV would go back to being proper again. I have no idea what they are doing now. Oh well, just gotta watch me vids on youtube. Hope you can attend the festival and have a great time there!

  8. summer eyes says yeah, now you have to have the premium digital cable package to get like four or five different MTV channels (MTVu and MTV2 are my favs) and MTV hits actually plays music videos all day. its funny how on the original MUSIC television channel they dont play much actual music.

  9. goodmusiconly says Everything you've heard and seen is true ... it was amazing being there. Talk about unforgettable fire! Bro, I can't tell you how excited I am to hear you might make it out here for Monolith ... Red Rocks is amazing in itself, and seeing a show with you there would blow the roof off the house (if there was one)!!

  10. Bartleby says Have you read B. E. Ellis's novel "American Psycho?" There's a scene which describes quite accurately a U2 concert.

  11. Mike the Knife says All's I know is it's Sunday, it's still bloody somewhere out there - and that Red Rocks performance is still triumphant...

  12. dharmachris says still gives me goosebumps with this one, the rain coming down, Bono waving that white flag, the Edge's guitar, which was revolutionary in those early 80s days still stewing with Journey and Styx. Get the album-- one of the best. But seriously, that hairstyle would now be called a mullet. From that same era, "Like A Song" which was, is, one of my favorites from them. Oh, and another video on heavy rotation before MTV went south:

  13. Zeroskilz says I was lucky enough to have MTV in the early days. I don't remember the full concerts though. Then again, I didn't really start watching until I was a bit older. Good luck on making it to Red Rocks.

  14. hex says I used to be angry that MUSIC television is too busy airing reality shows to run videos. And then I began to understand it's because almost all new mainstream music is so bad no matter how much you dress up the video, it's just got no soul. (and by mainstream, any group with a record label budget. I can't see them ever returning to airing band-created, low budget "concept"-esque videos.) And my generation is responsible to for Mtv's demise. I didn't object one bit when they started running things like liquid television.

  15. Dale says Sorry it took me so long to come back and reply to everyone's comments, but they're all great. I'm amazed in retrospect that this is coherent at all, given that it was posted early Sunday morning while working late. I can't believe this concert isn't on DVD. I betcha PopMart is, and it's not half the show. All that archness and irony didn't fit Bono and Co. at all. All of this makes me really want to get that live mini-album again. That was my first U2 purchase. I had it on vinyl, even! I have MTV2, but it's just become MTV junior, hardly any videos, and they won't show Subterranean at a regular time! I would _love_ to have MTVu, though. And I'm not kidding about Monolith, I don't see why that one couldn't happen! I just need a place to crash, and if I can do it on the corporate dime, so much the better. (Much of my work is in Denver, so it's not even that far-fetched.)

  16. Mike the Knife says Dale, I just saw an advance screening of "U2 3D" on the IMAX screen and will post about it closer to its release date. But I don't think that the studio/producers will mind if I tell you IT WAS SPECTACULAR!!!
