30 Great U2 Songs? Go!

Posted about 1 year ago
It was just an airy comment thrown about in Anna's listening station today, but it got me thinking, always a dangerous thing. See, I used to love U2. Their early albums were key in my adolescent development. Recently, Bono's over-the-top hectoring and their retreading over musical styles they've overgrown has dampened things a touch, but I think the older material still holds muster.Anyway, we were listening when Anna played U2's "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me." Not a crucial track of theirs, but not terrible either. Then the comment came:"There are 30 great U2 songs out there, this isn't one of them..."So, here's the deal: post into comments ONE great (by your definition) U2 song (NOT ALBUM), and let's see if we can get this thing to 30 different songs. So, the tagged songs above counts as one, and as my submission. It does a lot to expose U2's post-punk roots, especially the bass line. Very satisfying.I'm counting on you guys! GO!So far, we have:Stories For Boys (from Boy)Gloria (from October)One (from Achtung Baby)Lemon (from Zooropa)Running To Stand Still (from The Joshua Tree)Sunday Bloody Sunday (from War)Until The End Of The World (from Achtung Baby)The Wanderer (from Zooropa)The Sweetest Thing (from The Best of 1980-1990)Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (from Rattle and Hum)Drowning Man (from War)Bullet The Blue Sky (from The Joshua Tree)Party Girl (from Under A Blood Red Sky)Yahweh (from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb)Wake Up Dead Man (from Pop)Please (from Pop)Electrical Storm (from The Best of, 1990-2000)In God's Country (from The Joshua Tree)Two Hearts Beat As One (from War)New Year's Day (from War)I Will Follow (from Boy)In A Little While (from All That You Can't Leave Behind)With Or Without You (from The Joshua Tree)A Sort of Homecoming (from Wide Awake In America)Ultraviolet (Light The Way) (from Achtung Baby)Where The Streets Have No Name (from The Joshua Tree)11 O'Clock Tick Tock (from Under A Blood Red Sky)Bad (from The Unforgettable Fire)

  1. gympumpkin says Gloria. And if I can give an honorable mention, I say Lemon. I think it's really underrated.

  9. Dale says Nice, Jules! Now, don't take away from this that I disagree with Keith. War and The Joshua Tree are stone-cold classics, of that there is no doubt.

  11. Jules09 says I was going to say "I WIll Follow" from ??Boy??, but that's already represented here...so "Sunday Bloody Sunday" for me. One of their more famous ones, but probably one of their best too.

  18. dachmo says I reconciled with my U2 lovin' past but I still stop at Joshua Tree. Although the song I am about to throw in came out somewhere just after that album but I really don't know which one. It's not my favorite but I think it's pretty damn good: "The Sweetest Thing" ...yes I'm sappy.

  20. goodmusiconly says It's so ironic you should post about this. After that comment today I was reminiscing about seeing U2 in '83 ... I loved them then (especially when Bono grabbed my hand and held it while singing "40," I thought I'd died and gone to heaven), but I feel the same way as you about them now. I'm with Keith re: the whole of Joshua Tree and War. Boy, is up there too. I'm casting my vote for the underdog -- "Drowning Man" Please sir, could I have another? "Bullet the Blue Sky"

  21. mitchy says "Partygirl" not sure which album. Does it for me-nothing after Achtung Baby
    Permalink posted 01/03/2008
  22. Augusts1 says "Yahweh" on "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" which has alot of great gems on it like this. I think people really don't give U2 the credit they deserve for their songwriting on their last 4 albums: Zooropa, Pop, All That You Can't Leave Behind & Atomic Bomb. So many amazingly written songs & music. "Wake Up Dead Man" is another one off Pop.

  26. sommer face says Yay! U2! And it's so hard to just pick *one* song...so I'm giving you two, dammit. "Two Hearts Beat As One" off War/i> "In God's Country" off The Joshua Tree

  32. SamTheButcher says Glad August suggested "Yaweh". I'll chime in with "With Or Without You". I remember sitting on the counter when the song was released, seeing the video and saying outloud to my family in the kitchen, "This song is going to number one". It's just that good. The nice slow burn, the anthemic part towards the end, the chiming guitars...Classic. CLASSIC. And I'll resist the urge to suggest another one. :D

  33. Dale says Doggone it Sommer, tags are like flys, keep 'em closed! Nice selections, everyone! I like that Tara went for the Rattle and Hum version. Someone FINALLY picked Bullet The Blue Sky! Go Erin! mitchy, I only found Party Girl on Under A Blood Red Sky. Nice! That's the album that I listened to just about every day of summer '84. Bonus points! OKOK, so not every song on the later albums sucks, August. Thank you for representin'. Slow down sis, I'll let you have Electrical Storm and Please. No more for now. Nice pick, Jameson, and thanks for the props! Glad someone also picked I Will Follow. That opening guitar riff still sends chills up my spine. Good calls Duder! Good one Sam, that video and and was EPIC. And since most everyone is taking two, I feel a need to chime in with another. I'm gonna add A Sort of Homecoming, but the live take from Wide Awake In America. My kingdom for that cassette!

  35. Misstee says Its the gospel chorus in the live version that just FLOORS me....
    Permalink posted 01/04/2008
  36. SamTheButcher says Ok, I'll pick another since others are. :) "This Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)", unless you're going for only originals. I thought they really rocked this and it's still one of my favorite Christmas songs. This and "Peace On Earth". If not covers, then I'll pick "UltraVIOLET (Light My Way)" - Another EPIC song. :)

  43. ZenPop says I've given everyone a few days jump and I still don't see the absolute crusher U2 song that used to be their biggest (along with "I Will Follow") encore number... brought the house down every time... It (along with "I Will Follow," "Bad" and "Gloria" are my favorite live cuts...) "Eleven O'Clock Tick Tock" is the song sent the spirit soaring and crowd flailing... If you haven't heard it, check out the live version of this killer single...
    Permalink posted 01/06/2008
  44. ZenPop says Did I miss that one above? ...apparently so... argh!... then I choose "Bad"... that song has more emotion packed into it than almost anything else I can think of...
    Permalink posted 01/06/2008
  45. Dale says Nope, you didn't miss a thing, I added it, but I'll add "Bad" too because it would be a crime for The Unforgettable Fire to get no noms. Just wrong.
    Permalink posted 01/07/2008
  46. ZenPop says Thanks Dale... I thought I was going stir crazy or something... ha ha... "Unforgettable Fire" is, along with "Boy" my favorite U2 record... It's an understated masterpiece. By the way, that live version is from the "Fire" double-pack single... from a Boston club I believe.... Cheers!
