WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Daddy's Music

Christmas Eve, as I was out with the boys running some last minute errands, I got the greatest thrill. My youngest son Josh was listening along to the mixtape (in CD format) in the car, and _singing along_. Wouldn't that just melt your heart? It did mine, especially on a very trying day otherwise. Thus, the idea for a final Christmas present was hatched. I spent that night figuring out songs that I knew he liked, and songs that I thought he might like. See, I've figured out that he likes songs with a strong vocal hook. So after some digging and some guesswork, I came up with a 23-song mix that I thought he would like. The track listing:The Chemical Brothers - All Rights ReversedLCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk Is Playing At My HouseThe Vines - Get FreeThe Hives - Hate To Say I Told You SoAsh - Kung FuRamones - Blitzkrieg BopThe Von Bondies - C'mon C'monREM - Shiny Happy PeopleCharlotte Hatherley - SummerINXS - I Send A MessageMatthew Sweet - I've Been WaitingPatrick Wolf - The Magic PositionThe Legends - The Kids Just Wanna Have FunSwervedriver - How Does It Feel To Look Like Candy?Placebo - Special KNine Black Alps - Burn FasterLiars - Mr You're On Fire MrBloc Party - BanquetInterpol - Heinrich ManeuverRide - TwisterellaPale Saints - Sight Of YouThe Clash - This Is Radio ClashI figured that would be eclectic enough to get him interested in different eras and genres. He likes it so far, especially the Chemical Brothers song. We'll see how this works out.

  3. contrabandwidth says Sounds like a great mix. Love "Radio Clash" - it was the inspiration for my handle (well the whole "pirate satellite" part at least).

  4. goodmusiconly says Poor kid's not even safe from the EMCD in his own home. ;) He should consider himself very lucky to have such a cool pop.

  5. Dale says Yeah, I'll let you guys know as soon as I can pry him from the Wii. We got the Wii Zapper, so the boys have been taking turns playing Crossbow Challenge with their cousin. Fun fun! Keep the music crack out?!? I'm inviting it in, and introducing it to the kids. Would you prefer they get some weak substitute from their friends? EWWW It sounded pretty good when I made it, so I burned another copy for my car. I've always had a soft spot for that Clash song too. I count myself lucky every days to have such cool kids, that's for sure.

  6. Bartleby says Crikey, that's a very nice mix. Now, I wish I were you son. -- I bet I got you scare to death now, don't I? Peppy Krissmus to you and your family (perhaps a little belatedly but most wholeheatedly). Best of wishes for 2008.

  10. 1234chainsaw says Very nice mix. You tagged the post for "Blitzkrieg Bop". So does that mean the kids were piling in the backseat, generating steam heat, etc.? :P

  11. jenny says Awesome, Dale. It's fun to make mixes together, too, you know. It looks like a very nice car mix. I love that Matthew Sweet song, BTW. And who doesn't love Blitzkrieg Bop?

  13. annieander says My personal heaven is when Stan is singing to something (especially if it is something I tuned him onto). I have a brother, 13 years my junior. While I was away at collage, I would send him mixtapes. He listen to and loved them. I like to take a little credit for his love of music to this day. He was just about the same age as your boy is now. A great age to get them going. Awesome choices, BTW!

  17. amber says My favorite thing is playing "name that band" in the car with my daughter. It makes me proud that she can ID tons of bands by listening to their music...even if she hasn't hear the song before. And she's turning into quite the concert buddy. My 13 year old son, however....he has his own opinions of what is good music that doesn't always overlap mine. Youse a kewl daddy-o!

  18. Dale says Since we ate enchiladas and refried beans for Christmas Eve dinner, a family tradition, there probably was some steam heat getting generated as they piled into the backseat. Hahahaha. I'll have to try making a mix with him sometime, Jenny. It just reminds me that I used to put him to sleep, when he was a baby, by holding him and listening to music in front of the PC. It would be kinda the same thing, which makes me smile. Yeah Annie, he seems to soaking it up like a sponge. We'll see how it goes. I'm confused sis, is that the positive or negative connotation of "wicked"? :P I duuno Jeff and Ivey, his dad has his moments. He can be quite the pain in the neck too. It's kinda a package deal. ;) The parallels between our children continue to astound and frighten me, cuz. However, it's the 10-year old who has the sharp ear. A few years ago, I was listening to music and hit Talk Talk's version of "It's My Life". He immediately recognizes the song, but then says, "Wait a sec, Dad, doesn't a girl sing this?" He had heard the No Doubt version, and recognized them as the same song. It was a very proud moment.

  19. I am says You know D, as a trusted bell weather for all things goody goody ( I mean that in a sincere way) I have been looking for music that I enjoy that my kids could enjoy too. What an excellent mix. Could I ask you to toss it up on the other M, for my brood to dig also. I got some high energy ska that I will reciprocate with. You schooled your kids on Talk Talk and set them straight.
